Internship at WQXR
As New York’s only classical music station, WQXR is an important fixture of the city’s cultural landscape. The station broadcasts classical music over the air and online to hundreds of thousands of listeners each month, offering additional streams for new music, opera, and the Great American Songbook. We also produce podcasts, including Aria Code and The Open Ears Project, and offer live broadcasts from Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Opera, and more.
Interns at WQXR enjoy a robust, hands-on program that provides meaningful work experience. They will rotate through all WQXR departments including on-air programming and digital and on-demand content. Some of the skills they will acquire include writing and editorial experience, audio production and editing, CMS and web content publishing, music programming and database management, and the potential for assisting with live event production.
Responsibilities 
  • Produce the Daily Playlist Email, an exclusive member benefit sent to 40,000+ subscribers daily.
  • Provide support for special programming initiatives, including the Classical Countdown.
  • Edit and assemble audio for broadcast in Pro Tools.
  • Create dynamic web pages for the Met Opera, Carnegie Hall Live broadcasts, and other popular programs.
  • Add new tracks to the WQXR music database.
  • Support the live events team with stage management and other production duties.
  • Pitch and write web features related to classical music and the performing arts in the New York City area.
  • Generate and edit transcripts for on-demand audio.
  • Keep internal programming calendar up to date.

 

Qualifications
  • Strong interest in radio and broadcast media
  • Knowledge of and passion for classical music
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to plan ahead, but also be flexible to adapt to priority shifts
  • Familiarity with DAW software (such as Pro Tools) a plus
  • An ambitious and ready-to-learn attitude
  • Creative and independent problem-solver
Eligibility
In order to be eligible for an internship at New York Public Radio you must be currently enrolled in, or have graduated from no more than 12 months prior to the start of the internship to which you are applying for, an accredited undergraduate or graduate program. You must also be authorized to work in the United States and live/work in a commutable distance of our office in SoHo.
Additional Information
This role is a paid internship with a rate of $17.50 per hour and has eligibility for college credit. The internship will commence in November and run through the spring semester. Interns are expected to work 15-25 hours per week. The exact schedule and hours will be determined with the finalist.
This internship will operate in a hybrid (remote/in-person) environment. Interns are expected to work from our NYC Headquarters on specific days with regularity. The exact schedule and in person cadence will be determined in conjunction with the supervisor.
