Description

The Nursing Educator is available to provide care/assistance to the staff, physicians and patients within all aspects of the medical surgical setting.

Bachelors Required
Masters Preferred

Additional Certification & Licensures details

Active TN Nursing License or Compact State License- REQUIRED
BLS required.  ACLS preferred.

Additional experience requirements

-Three (3) to Five (5) years proven experience in Nursing/ Professional Development (Education)/ Quality.

-Experience in integrated health systems in an academic medical center preferred.

-Exceptional oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.

-Microsoft Office Skills- Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

-Ability to apply adult learning principles to design and implement change initiatives in alignment with facility and department strategic plan.

Job Duties

STAFF EDUCATION

  • Educates and instructs staff individually or in groups in support of clinical activities
  • Outlines a planned approach for instruction taking into consideration staff learning abilities and utilizes available resources
  • Assess and creates action plan for identified staff needing additional developmental/education to meet standards and expectations.
  • Provides instruction based on staff specific needs, i.e. gown / gloving, equipment, sterile technique, P&P, etc 
  • Serves as a resource and confidant to staff and patients
  • Routinely and systematically evaluates the educational needs of the staff in THE Medical Surgical setting.
  • Implements and organizes appropriate teaching materials.
  • Creatively designs a variety of methods to encourage learning and professional development of staff
  • Presents current information to class through lectures or group discussions
  • Fosters a professional environment

STAFF FOLLOW-UP

  • Evaluates individual/departmental/division staff needs and establishes a plan for follow-up
  • Uses skills in group settings which encourage staff participation
  • Coordinates individual and group participation and discussions as relates to new and current Policy and Procedure
  • Confers with other healthcare team members regarding staff follow-up education needs 0 %
  • Monitors staff understanding and adherence to materials and information presented; provides follow-up training as deemed necessary
  • Collaborates with staff members in developing an action plan regarding staff understanding of new material presented.

DEPARTMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains accurate and current records on staff
  • Documents assessment, educational, staff response and skills in staff file
  • Maintains current documentation of staff skill abilities in specific areas of management (e.g. P&P, in-services, training, certifications, competencies)
  • Completes reports and submits to supervisor as requested 
  • Consistently monitors availability of equipment and supplies required to support ongoing education programs
  • Demonstrates flexibility in working hours and shift schedules to meet facility needs
  • Identifies appropriate aspects of to audit and promote staff participation in quality improvement activities.

  • Demonstrates cooperation, respect and support for patients, families, co-workers and other healthcare team members
  • Maintains strict confidentiality in matters relating to patients and hospital personnel

POLICY AND PROCEDURE

  • Supports nursing leadership to implement infrastructure including policies and procedures that support the nursing division, including those for data analysis. Staff RN competencies.                              
  • Ensures nursing practices and corresponding policies and procedures related to clinical IT follow appropriate legal and regulatory requirements.

QUALITY

  • Acts as a change agent working with nursing leadership in the identification, development, planning, implementation, and measurement of strategies to support and integrate quality patient care and professional practice.
  • Supports nursing education to ensure that documentation & processes are reflective of evidenced based education and competency validation.
  • Develops and maintains standards of care that inform/guide evidence-based practice, quality of care, patient safety and clinician workflows.
  • Facilitates coordination and integration of standard of care practices across clinical departments for quality patient care.
  • Ability to collaborate or provide nursing clinical knowledge support in analytics projects.

LEADERSHIP

  • Supports the implementation of management decisions that affect nursing practice in the clinical area. Plans educational programming for new or changing programs of care. Assists in development of clinical policies and procedures as requested.
  • Provides guidance, resources and knowledge for professional growth of others.
  • Mentors colleagues, other nurses, students and others as appropriate.
  • Participates in quality performance improvement activities.
  • Participates in strategic planning, ad hoc projects and educational activities as assigned for the department.
  • Communicates effectively with colleagues across NGH to advance goal achievement.
  • Demonstrates skill in navigating and communicating in a complex environment. Fosters achievement of Nursing Education/Development goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for reporting to licensing, certification, accreditation, and other regulatory bodies for educational program compliance.
  • Interacts with staff in an ethical, consistent, fair, timely, appropriate and decisive manner in accordance with organization-wide and Nursing Department policies.
  • Identifies factors that affect staff's ability to fulfill their job responsibilities, collaborates with management to effect appropriate change in systems.
  • Accepts Committee and workgroup appointments and actively participates to affect change in patient care and the NGH system.
