Description

This position is primarily responsible to perform “scrub” duties under the direction of a registered nurse and assist the physician during procedures as directed by the physician, assist in preparing for surgical procedures either routine or emergency, assisting in the maintenance of equipment and supplies, and other tasks assigned by supervisor. Applies knowledge of age related factors to patients ranging from neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.

Demonstrates competency to perform proper specimen collection

  • Never discards any tissue sample unless the surgeon verifies this act
  • All specimens are handled according to policy/procedure.
  • Utilizes universal precautions when handling specimens

Demonstrates the knowledge and ability to maintain sterile technique

  • Scrubs, gowns, and gloves according to aseptic technique
  • Follows aseptic technique, when opening sterile supplies and setting up procedures
  • Maintains aseptic environment and reports any breaks in technique to the Surgeon and/or Circulator
  • Takes proper measures to correct any break in technique

Competency to provide equipment and supplies based on patient needs.

  • Provides standard OR equipment available and in working order (such as cautery, suction, & positioning devices).
  • Refers to surgeon’s preference list to ensure the availability of supplies
  • Demonstrates knowledge of instruments needed for procedures

Demonstrates active interest in increasing clinical understanding and abilities

  • Accepts on-call duties as assigned
  • Assist with precepting/orientation of new employees

Demonstrates knowledge and ability to perform surgical scrub duties.

  • Reports to work at assigned time
  • Attends morning report
  • Prepares OR room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment.
  • Sets up, scrubs, and prepares for procedure at least 15 minutes prior to scheduled time, unless otherwise directed
  • Checks instruments/equipment prior to case for proper functioning
  • Checks indicators for proper sterilization
  • Participates in time-out process with the OR team to identify the correct operative site/patient
  • Assists with positioning/draping of patient for the procedure
  • Maintains an orderly back table for the purpose of efficiency

Demonstrates the ability to provide a safe environment and follow established safety measures

  • Takes necessary safety precautions regarding patients, positioning, medication, and equipment use
  • Correctly handles specimens and verifies labeling with the circulator
  • Follows policy/procedure for steam sterilization; knows responsibility in re: to air leak & biological testing
  • Performs diagnostic on Steris sterilizer prior to use
  • Follow policy/procedure for Steris sterilization
  • Reports breakage, loss or misuse of equipment to OR Support Coordinator and/or Manager

Demonstrates the ability to utilize proper instrument sterilization techniques.

  • Demonstrates ability to perform, interpret, and document sterilization parameter on steam sterilizers
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform, interpret and document Steris sterilization

Maintains accurate counts of supplies and instruments used during the case

  • Maintains accurate counts of sponges, needles, sharp and instruments
  • Audibly counts sponges, needles, sharps, & instruments with the circulating nurse at the appropriate times according to policy/procedure
  • Follows proper procedure in the event of incorrect counts by reporting discrepancies & correcting immediately
  • Correctly prepares instruments for cleaning in CS, uses enzymatic solution to cover dirty instruments

Education and Certification(s):

  • High School Diploma (Equivalent) or Higher 
  • Successful Completion of an accredited surgical technologist program 
  • Holds current certification as Certified Surgical Tech established by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)  
  • Employee must have valid BLS upon hire
  • CPI required within 90 days of hire
