The Office of the CIO (OCIO) Infrastructure Team is responsible for developing and maintaining a common infrastructure that is used all around JPL. This team of about 10 people are responsible for our infrastructure that spans physical hardware, virtual computing, shared storage, and cloud. The services that we offer are:

  • IT architecture consulting
  • Monitoring and Alerting

What You Will Do

As the Technical Lead, you will be responsible for understanding the overall architecture of our existing systems and drive efforts to develop new systems or refactor existing ones.

    • New and existing systems
    • Collecting feedback and diplomatically suggesting improvements
    • Documentation

    • Establish a regular cadence for architecture review based on best practices
    • Establish a set of Design Guidelines and Best Practices around the following focus areas
  • Operational Lead
    • Review alerts for actionability
    • Is there an appropriate run book entry for an alert
    • Postmortems
    • Establish a process for identifying common manual tasks and drive efforts to automate them.
    • Establish and measure SLOs
    • Establish an incident review process
        • Incident Resolution vs Problem Resolution
        • Root Cause Analysis
  • Product Manager
    • Understanding the use cases of the customers
    • Prioritize work based on highest impact
    • Define road maps
    • Address technical debt on a regular basis
  • Team Lead
    • Reduce information silos
    • Establish base skills set

Ideal Candidate

Required Skills

  • A proven record of driving and completing efforts to standardize system design improvements
  • The ability to work with internal customers, related teams, and stakeholders
  • A strong technical background in the following areas
    • Virtualization (VMWare, Kubernetes, Docker)
    • Shared Storage (NetApp, Amazon S3)
    • Cloud Platforms (AWS)
    • Hyper converged infrastructure (Cisco UCS, HP blades, Nutanix)
    • Software development with mastery of a programming language
    • OS (unix, linux, and some Windows)

  • A base understanding of project management philosophy including
    • Requirements gathering
    • Breaking down tasks into areas that can be worked on simultaneously
