INTERN WORKSITE LOCATION: Kotido/Moroto District, Uganda

 

 

LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP: April – October (Flexible as long as 3 months minimum)

 

Availability: M-F 9am-5pm (Flexbile)

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR THE INTERNSHIP: $500/month stipend

 

 

 

Mercy Corps responsibilities

For the duration of this internship assignment the intern will receive:

  • Accommodation in shared guesthouse in Karamoja sub-region
  • Per diem while out of duty station
  • Sim card to facilitate communication
  • Visa costs
  • ISOS emergency medical evacuation insurance
  • Transportation between Karamoja and Kampala
  • Field travel costs
  • Mercy Corps email address and online tools
  • All other tools, materials and communication requirements for this SoW to be undertaken

 

 

Intern responsibilities

Intern will remain responsible for all costs associated with:

  • Air travel to/from Uganda
  • Medical insurance
  • Vaccinations
  • Living expenses
  • Providing an adequate computer to complete the necessary work
  • All other costs associated with the internship

 

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Mercy Corps Uganda is implementing a five year USAID funded Activity named Apolou in the Eastern Districts of the Karamoja sub-region of Uganda. The Activity is implemented in four Districts of Karamoja: Kotido, Kaabong, Moroto and Amudat. It covers programmatic areas including: crop production, agricultural input sales, livestock production, veterinary pharmaceuticals, construction of household latrines, construction of small market infrastructure, WASH infrastructure repair, storing of commodities among other areas. The Activity has 7 subawardee partnerships including local CSOs and INGOs.

 

The Activity has four strategic objectives:

  1. Inclusive and effective governance contributes to food and nutrition security
  2. Adolescent girls, Pregnant and Lactating Women, and Children under 5 are nutritionally secure
  3. Adoption of improved WASH practices
  4. Improved livelihoods and income support household food security

 

Apolou is committed to building the talent and capacity of our energetic and entrepreneurial team members. The Activity plans to roll out a Leadership Initiative which will build the hard and soft skills of rising leaders and staff members across our field offices. The intern will work closely with Apolou management and the associated technical team members to roll out trainings, workshops, events and to develop materials in support of this initiative.

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: The intern will have a unique opportunity to understand the challenges and rewards of internal capacity building within a large team of 150+ staff members, while working in the fascinating context of Karamoja, Uganda, as part of an energetic and entrepreneurial team. The intern will be exposed to Mercy Corps’ unique approach to team capacity building (People with Possibilities, among others).

DELIVERABLES:

  1. Successful planning and delivery of training and mentorship to staff participating in the Apolou Leadership Initiative demonstrated by a final comprehensive report and associated training materials

 

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree in International Development, Management, HR, or a related field with knowledge and/or interest in the field of international development, Master’s degree is preferred
  2. Strong organizational skills
  3. Experience and/or desire to support team members build their capacity
  4. Strong written and verbal communicator (English)
  5. Outgoing, enthusiastic, creative, and a tremendous amount of flexibility
  6. A self-starter who can work with minimal supervision and limited resources such as intermittent electricity or internet
  7. Adventurous person willing to work in the least developed region of Uganda
  8. Cultural sensitivity is essential

 

Living Conditions:

The intern will reside in a shared guest house in Kotido/Moroto District. Internet, electricity and running water are generally available. Access to medical services is limited. Security in Karamoja is good. The intern will have free weekends that can be used for tourism and safari activities at their own expense.
