The Role

The Fundraising team plays a key role in Mercy Corps, generating income and raising our profile.  MCE’s Fundraising team has ambitious goals to increase private fundraising across the UK and continental Europe to support our agency goals around humanitarian aid, development and peacebuilding. 


Mercy Corps’ European headquarters have been in Edinburgh for almost 30 years and in terms of income, is the largest international Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) based in Scotland. As a key member of the Supporter Fundraising and Engagement team, the Senior Fundraising Officer will have specific responsibility for building on our local roots and growing effective partnerships with individuals and corporates to achieve fundraising targets and to increase Mercy Corps’ impact in Edinburgh and beyond. Managing one team member, the Senior Fundraising Officer will ensure that our event and community fundraisers continue to receive superb support.


We are looking for an ambitious individual with significant one-to-one fundraising experience, who is interested in a career in the NGO sector. Essential Job Responsibilities

Function Management

  • Alongside the Senior Fundraising Manager put in place a strategy and working plan to meet the long-term goals of the Community Fundraising team
  • Identifying new initiatives to maximise income against goals and creating cases for support for implementation
  • Effectively supporting the Community Fundraising and Engagement Assistant to achieve their objectives. 

Relationship Building and Management

  • Working closely with the Senior Director to successfully identify, gain and steward high profile relationships with corporates based in Edinburgh or with strong links to Scotland.
  • Maintain relationships with existing partners – prioritising in order to maximise fundraising
  • Increase the number of, and value from, high value donors in Scotland, stewarding as appropriate.
  • Identify key partnerships to pursue (with an eye to fundraising potential)
  • Maintain relationships with key external stakeholders

Event Fundraising

  • Ensure that events Mercy Corps are involved in managing are implemented to the highest standard, at all times maximising income and supporter experience
  • Support the Assistant to manage event planning workload, stepping in to manage key relationships and taking on tasks, to ensure success
  • Research, identify and implement new owned events and/or event partnerships including participating in third party events


  • In partnership with the assistant plan and manage all supporter journeys, and communications for fundraisers, donors, organisations and volunteers
  • In collaboration with the wider team, initiate and manage cultivation events for key supporters and prospects

 Finance and Reporting

  • Undertake work planning on a monthly basis for all community fundraising and engagement activities
  • Regularly monitoring results against budget
  • Reporting on progress monthly
  • Forecasting on a quarterly basis

Other Responsibilities

  • Effectively manage Community Fundraising and Engagement Assistant
  • Feed into and assist with the implementation of supporter journeys in collaboration with the wider Fundraising team
  • Actively engage in internal communications to inform Mercy Corps team members about events and partnerships, encourage participation and infuse enthusiasm as we continue to build our presence in Edinburgh.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Significant experience in quickly building rapport and nurturing relationships with external partners for mutual benefits.
  • Experience of researching and initiating new activities, including partnerships, to meet fundraising goals
  • Proven ability at managing and delivering complex events, involving multiple partners and tight deadlines
  • Demonstrable experience of working with a fundraising or similar CRM or relational database for marketing, engagement and/or fundraising to input data.  Experience of the Raiser’s Edge would be an advantage but is not essential.
  • Skilled in anticipating and applying logical solutions to solving problems that may arise
  • Demonstrated confident, flexible and resilient approach to work
  • Logical thinker and able to use own initiative to solve problems
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and successfully work with different teams to achieve shared goals and meet shared standards

The position is based in Edinburgh and may require some minimal travel.
