Under general supervision, according to established procedures, operates telephone and other communication equipment in order to a) answer and transfer incoming, outgoing and in-house calls not dialed direct, b) provide paging services for physicians and other Hospital personnel, c) monitor various alarm instruments for critical situations and page corresponding codes, and d) maintain base station for radio paging system.
Job Description
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Operates telephone equipment in order to a) answer and transfer local and long distance incoming calls that are not dialed direct, b) provide directory assistance by relaying telephone numbers and titles of Hospital personnel and departments, and c) place local calls that cannot be dialed direct from patient rooms.
- Receives calls which require paging of physicians and other Hospital personnel and pages individuals over loud speaker system as appropriate.
- Receives emergency calls and monitors alarms, and utilizing established procedures pages codes indicating emergency situations in various areas of the Hospital.
- Maintains base station for radio paging system (pocket pagers) contacts appropriate individuals and relays message or provides call\u2011back number.
- Monitors various instruments for critical situations such as fire alarm system, annunciator panel, blood bank alarm, code blue phone, etc.
- Receives and answers patient information calls providing limited factual information such as room number, telephone extension, visiting hours, hours of operation, and so forth.
- Notifies telephone company of phones or other equipment which require repair.
- Maintains rolodex card system detailing patient admissions, discharges, and transfers in order to develop and update a directory of patients.
- Maintains a directory of telephone numbers for department heads and physicians. Calls in surgery crew, AOD and others when so requested by authorized personnel.
- Performs miscellaneous duties such as distributing keys, routine clerical work, distributing beepers, announcing end of visiting hours, and other duties assigned by supervisors.
- Interacts with all associates, guests, and physicians in a courteous, respectful, and friendly manner. Remains aware of visitors and patients in the Hospital's public areas; assists these Hospital customers whenever it appears appropriate by providing directions, helping them with chairs or doors, etc. Adheres to the Hospitality \"\"House Rules.\"\"
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's/area's/department's policies and procedures.
