Position at McClatchy


We’re looking for a confident self-starter with a wide range of public relations experience, ideally in the news media industry and/or with publicly-traded companies. Primary responsibilities will focus on managing social media accounts and supporting media relations initiatives that reflect the dynamism of the corporate brand and the important role of independent, local journalism to society and democracy.


Social Media

  • Create content strategy for McClatchy’s existing social platforms -- Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Medium and potential launch of new platforms.
  • Manage accounts for engagement and growth and monitor mentions of McClatchy.
  • Develop response strategies as needed and in coordination with PR Director.
  • Highlight potential opportunities for promotion and issues developing online that require attention and care.
  • Create visuals for social media including videos, gifs and infographics.
  • Use analytic tools to measure effectiveness and refine approaches.
  • Help launch new blog platform focused on developments in journalism, innovation and new initiatives at McClatchy and related news, reflecting transparency on how the company’s brand of award-winning local news is created and innovative approaches to the future of news.

Media Relations

  • Contribute to development and implementation of communications strategy.
  • Support ongoing proactive initiatives to raise visibility of McClatchy and the critical role of local news by promoting podcasts, investigative work, awards and events.
  • Draft talking points and brief senior executives on public relations issues.
  • Establish productive collaborations with executives and colleagues in investor relations, video, news, advertising, technology and audience to effectively communicate the achievements of the whole enterprise.


  • Draft op-eds, blog posts, announcements and pitch letters; build media lists.
  • Distribute announcements using media database and distribution service.
  • Manage media inquiries and monitor media coverage of McClatchy.
  • Develop one-pagers, fact sheets, executive bios and backgrounders on key topics.


  • BA in Journalism, Communications or English.
  • 3-5 years of public relations experience. Familiarity managing public relations for a publicly traded company is a plus.
  • Strong writing skills -- social headlines, press releases, blogs, talking points.
  • 2+ years of experience managing social media accounts.
  • Experience working with analytic tools -- Chartbeat, Facebook and Twitter analytics -- and leveraging them to create effective social strategies.
  • Experience creating gifs and infographics preferred.
  • Familiarity with news media industry.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure and to meet deadlines.
  • Works effectively both independently and collaboratively with teams and across functional lines.
  • Passion for journalism with a strong understanding of related ethics and intellectual property practices related to publishing online.
  • Willingness to travel within the US, up to 25%.
