POSITION SUMMARY


This position will report to the VP Audience/Head of On Demand. The position has regional responsibility for audience growth and revenue for all the regions on demand products. This includes but is not limited to each newspaper’s retail sales locations, newsrack locations, business traveler, retail & business, hawking, retail partnership programs, digital single copy, commemorative sections / special days, and additional revenue product sales.  


The position will also have regional responsibility for designing and executing a series of sales & marketing and digital engagement campaigns directed at growing the single copy print and digital footprint for the region's newspapers. This plan must be linked to the core strategies and targets for each of the newspapers.


The Group Director of On Demand and his or her team will have goals and targets including but not limited to audience targets, revenue targets, and expense targets for each of the newspapers, with the sum of all equating to an operating cash flow target for the company. The position and his or her team are expected to contribute to delivering on these targets, anticipate shortfalls and identify areas for improvement or alternative plans to meet established goals as necessary.   


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned as needed to ensure success for each of the McClatchy Newspapers.


  • Responsible for the leadership, development, management and performance of the regional team, which includes but is not limited to print and digital sales and marketing programs and point-of-sales materials to grow the footprint at each of the McClatchy  newspapers.  

  • Responsible for the design and implementation of comprehensive single copy sales plans that deliver the needed volume to support each newspaper’s core print product.

  • Facilitates, develops and aligns the single copy sales and marketing initiatives with each newspaper’s overall marketing plans.

  • Works to develop the needed creative offerings to ensure the features and benefits of each product is communicated to its targeted potential buyers.

  • Coordinates the production process for sales/marketing materials to include copywriting, graphic design, printing specs/quotes and printing.

  • Performs scheduling of promotional media, signage and consumer messaging to ensure that all are linked to each of the newspaper’s brand marketing programs.

  • Responsible for ensuring that all single copy marketing programs meet the needed ROI and targeted average rate per unit of sale as outlined in each newspaper’s budget.

  • Analyzes weekly and period single copy & digital audience sales volumes utilizing the information to make needed adjustments and to develop strategic plans for the future.

  • Performs scheduling of promotional media, signage and consumer messaging to ensure that all are linked to each of the McClatchy newspapers.  

  • Responsible for supporting, communicating and adhering to each of the McClatchy newspaper’s mission, vision and core values.

  • Responsible for knowing, communicating and delivering on the key performance indicator targets for each of the McClatchy Newspapers.

  • Stays in touch with the industry’s best practices and uses the practices to improve the productivity of programs used in each of the McClatchy  newspapers.   

  • Actively participates in McClatchy audience division conference calls, sharing ideas and best practices.

  • Ensures that all contracted work is done in accordance with the agreement the vendor has with us, with governing laws, policies and the McClatchy Company values and Code of Business Ethics.

  • The Group Director of On DemandUpdated is responsible for direction and coordination of their team. This will include coordination with the logistics team and their local site managers which will work collectively together to grow single  copy & digital volumes at each of the McClatchy  newspapers.  

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Ensures accountability by position to ensure each person delivers on their assigned targets for each of the McClatchy newspapers.  

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; and 2-3 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires a prior work history that demonstrates strong successful leadership ability and solid understanding of complexities of newspaper circulation, sales, distribution and marketing.


Knowledge of principles and methods for showing, promoting, and selling products or services.. Knowledge of media production techniques and processes.   Ability to influence, and work collaboratively with staff and management. Proficient in Microsoft word and Excel.  Must be professional and courteous in dealing with customers, colleagues, employees and managers.  Must be highly organized, have good judgment and decision making skills.  Requires concise and effective verbal and written communications skills.  Must be professional and courteous in dealing with colleagues, employees, management and customers. Ability to travel as required.



LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as distribution fees, wholesale and retail rates, commissions, proportions and percentages.  


REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
