Full Stack Developer

Editorial Sacramento, CA

You’re an explorer who doesn’t need a map to find your way. You’re a digital wizard who transforms pixels into magic. A blank canvas inspires you. You relish a good story. #RealNews earns your deepest respect, even if you’ve never worked in journalism. And you’re a relentlessly curious person who gets bored with routine (but you’re seriously driven).

Does this sound like you? Read on:

The Video Lab at McClatchy is an award-winning team established in 2014. It’s a collaborative group of creatives -- across editorial, revenue and product areas -- focused on delivering experiences that connect with new and existing audiences. We’re now doubling down on our early successes and opening Video Lab West.

The new space in Sacramento will be a destination for journalism and technology communities to collaborate (from McClatchy and beyond).  And we’re looking for a back-end developer to join our team of story hackers.

This position will design and code creative solutions in support of our mission to define what’s next for immersive nonfiction storytelling. Producing content for emerging platforms takes a group of deeply creative people and you will be part of a team that is focused on building tools that will enable future forms of visual storytelling.

Technology will drive our strategy, but not our mission. We’ll start by exploiting immersive technologies: augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality and 360 video. We’ll distribute content across platforms, meeting our audiences where they are.

We need someone with a maker/hacker mentality. If you don’t know it, you’re willing to teach yourself. You tinker with new technologies and aspire to build the future. We’ll use the principles of design thinking to fearlessly experiment, prototype and change course when necessary.

You’ll also be involved in our network development and community building. Both areas are crucial to our success and growth. Activities will include -- but not be limited to -- contributing to our blog, social media and newsletter and participating in screenings, social events and workshops hosted by Video Lab West or in conjunction with our technology partners on both the local and industry-wide level.

This is a roll-up-your-sleeves startup environment, where traditional lines and roles blur as the team focuses on perfecting the experience. If you’re a motivated individual with a passion to empower creatives to bring their ideas to life, you’ll fit right in.
