Position at The Washington Bureau

We’re looking for an experienced Operations Manager to help support and grow a national video operation. The Video Lab at McClatchy is a collaborative group of creatives -- across editorial, revenue and product areas -- focused on delivering experiences that connect with existing and new audiences.
This individual will be responsible for supporting the production efforts of our various teams in Washington, including overseeing our studios. The successful candidate’s knowledge of production tools, codecs and the ability to stay up to date with industry standards will be crucial to our team’s success.
You will also be a technical resource for McClatchy’s 31 publications, standardizing production workflows and ensuring we have the most efficient video processes and tools for our journalists. We highly value the ability to think big, quickly iterate and an ongoing desire to find innovative uses of technology. A background in digital video products and newsroom workflows is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day technical efforts of the national video operation
  • Work with other video department leaders to standardize production workflows across all newsrooms
  • Manage video and audio production studios
  • Partner and teach McClatchy newsrooms on systems and equipment
  • Stay current with the latest technology trends, fearlessly experimenting with the latest tools
  • Support and manage video equipment inventory
  • Demonstrate flexibility and the ability to pivot and quickly iterate

Requirements

  • College degree required
  • Minimum of 2 years digital video production experience
  • Advanced knowledge of video production equipment, software and apps, including DSLRs, cinema cameras, Adobe Premiere or Final Cut X
  • Knowledge of live streaming hardware and protocols a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills required; must be a team player
  • Strategic thinking experience and the ability to work with diverse groups of colleagues across all markets is essential
  • Understanding of publishing systems and online video platforms
  • Familiarity with industry trends, technologies and vendors
  • Comfortable managing large projects and budgets
  • Must be familiar with digital journalism; design thinking experience a plus

This position is based in Washington, DC and will report to the Director, Strategic Video Initiatives. Some travel may be required.
