Audience Growth Producer

The audience growth producer for the Carolinas region will work across seven newsrooms in North and South Carolina. This position is based in The Charlotte Observer newsroom. The Carolinas audience growth team is responsible for determining the best ways to promote our journalism and engage and interact with readers, with the goal of building long-term engagement and loyalty, while continuing to attract new audiences.

The ideal candidate would have experience working in content management systems and social platforms, plus a working knowledge of SEO and digital best practices. The candidate must be organized and able to multitask, as they will be working across multiple newsrooms daily. Keen news judgment, strong communications skills and the ability to collaborate with fellow employees are also a must.

 Duties and responsibilities:

  • Manage newsroom social media accounts. Deep expertise in a specific platform (ie, Instagram, Twitter, etc.) is a plus, but you will work on all platforms.
  • Assist in creating strategies for engagement and crowdsourcing.
  • Manage our home pages and optimize story pages.
  • Monitor real-time analytics and make decisions based on that information.
  • Assist reporters and editors with story packaging and content promotion. This includes identifying target audiences, determining story format and improving and testing headlines.
  • Produce customized newsletters and manage push alerts.
  • Night or weekend schedules are a possibility.
  • Some travel may be required.

Education and knowledge: College degree required. Minimum of two years writing and/or production experience preferred. Extensive background in journalism, video and online media preferred.

Physical Activity Requirements

  • Work is primarily in an office environment. Position requires ability to move from one location to another, sitting, standing, bending, talking, hearing, use of near, mid-range and far vision.
  • May need to lift/carry up to 10 pounds of equipment.
  • Uses computer, which may require prolonged keyboarding and using of mouse.
  • Employee may work more than their scheduled number of hours and may work non-traditional business hours.
  • Ground or air travel may be necessary.
  • Employee must have a valid driver’s license, good driving record and dependable vehicle and must carry vehicle insurance.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is a necessary element of this job.
