We’re looking for an experienced Video Producer to join us in building a major component of McClatchy’s future. The Video Lab at McClatchy is a collaborative group of creatives -- across editorial, revenue and product areas -- focused on delivering experiences that connect with existing and new audiences.

This Video Producer will play an important role in curating, optimizing and creating video content that appeals to local and national online audiences. The role requires close collaboration with across our 30 newsrooms. This individual will be vital to our success on weekday evenings.

The schedule for this role is currently Sunday-Thursday, (Monday through Thursday, 3 pm-11 pm and 11 am-7 pm on Sunday).


Curate and produce video for related stories across our network of websites
Monitor real-time analytics to manage and publish video content within a CMS and social platforms
Optimize video with strong headlines, captions, summaries and blog posts
Organize and maintain story budgets
Work with newsrooms to assist in meeting monthly goals and to develop creative, visual approaches to storytelling
Independently conceive, research, write, shoot and edit compelling videos on a tight timeline

Education: College degree required.

Special Training: Ability to masterfully edit video. Background in journalism, video and online media preferred.

Experience: Minimum of 2 years digital journalism experience.

Skills Needed: Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and team-player skills required. Professionalism, strategic-thinking experience and the ability to work with a broad section of colleagues essential. Visual sensibility and experience contributing to interactive and multimedia work with creative concepts and implementation. Strong communication, reliable news judgment, ability to meet deadlines and coaching skills needed. An understanding of audience trends and digital media important.

Personal Attributes: Energy, flexibility, and online smarts. The ability to monitor a vast amount of information for a wide audience, matched with discerning judgment. Skill to effectively communicate and work well with a variety of editors and staff at all levels within a networked video-focused team. Aptitude for thinking big, working wisely and quickly iterating.

This position will be based in the Washington, D.C. office and will report to the Real-Time Desk Editor. Some travel may be required.
