The ideal candidate will be a veteran journalist, unafraid of interacting with powerful people, who has demonstrated exceptional skill at both organizing projects and engaging diplomatically and efficiently with multiple stakeholders.

The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with editors in Washington and North Carolina to recruit contributors to the project and then act as lead liaison between the newsroom and that network of contributors. The person in this role will help to plan surveys of the network as well as related policy events over the course of 2018. The person in this role also might be called on to do some writing for McClatchy’s politics site and the politics sites of McClatchy’s North Carolina publications.

This part-time position for 20-30 hours per week will be located in our Raleigh office for nine months.


Education:     College degree required.

Experience:   Five years of reporting and/or managing experience in a news organization preferred.

Energy, flexibility, and motivation to crush the competition.  The ability to monitor a vast amount of information for a wide audience, matched with discerning judgment about what to pursue.  Excellent communication and problem-solving skills are required as well as the ability to execute both quickly and well, with creativity.  A collaborative style that works comfortably across teams spread throughout the office and company is a necessity.

Excellent written and oral communication skills required.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure.

An ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects, to consistently meet deadlines and be able to successfully move quickly from one task to the next is required.  The applicant must be able to think tactically as well as strategically and be able to transition theory to practice in a short amount of time.

Valid driver’s license preferred.  No other certification, licenses or registrations required.
