Position at The Telegraph (Macon)

The Telegraph is looking for an ambitious, high-energy Real-Time News Reporter to bolster our local news report and local audience.

The Real-Time News Reporter will be responsible for writing, compiling and/or producing lightning-fast stories and posts on local, state, and regional news that is driving the conversation online – or will be driving it a few minutes from now.  It could be about a Wal-Mart bakery in Georgia refusing to make a Blue Lives Matter cake for a retiring policeman, the Internet's reaction to the local baseball team's new name (Macon Bacon, if you were wondering), or new restaurant openings.

Special Skills:
Ability to use a computer and other digital devices for reporting in a digital-first newsroom. Must be internet/online savvy.

Physical Requirements:
Requires the ability to drive an automobile at a variety of various times of the day or night during a variety of conditions (rain).

Requires the ability to sit, stand or walk and use a keyboard for potentially extended periods of time during daily fulfillment of duties.

Education:   College degree required, preferably in journalism.

Experience:  Proven track record writing and managing social media posts to build an audience, and/or experience writing online content for a newspaper

Skills: The most compelling candidates will have: 

  • The ability to write quickly, accurately and well.
  • Solid news judgment and excellent journalism ethics.
  • An intuitive sense of what’s important and interesting. 
  • A good grasp of what drives interest on Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms.
  • A strong entrepreneurial spirit, deep curiosity and extremely high energy.  
  • A collaborative style that works comfortably across teams spread throughout the office and company.
  • Quick study of Content Management Systems and storytelling tools.
  • Video skills, including editing, a plus. 
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of staff and editors.
