Environmental Engineer
OVERVIEW
The Environmental Engineer will work as a strategic partner with production staff to achieve desired environmental management priorities for the Manistee, Magnesia Specialties operations. Ensure compliance with Martin Marietta policies & procedures with respect to safety, environmental, state and federal process regulations and perform all duties in a manner which promotes a safe and ethical work environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Lead, manage and execute all regulatory and environmental programs for air, water and hazardous waste including compliance requirements with local, state, and federal permitting and reporting
- Through data analysis, collect, analyze, and interpret environmental data such as air quality, water quality, and soil samples to identify pollutants and potential environmental impacts
- Ensure the facility adheres to environmental regulations by conducting regular inspections, monitoring emissions, and reviewing permit applications
- Maintains Title V Renewable Operating Permit and a National Pollution Discharge Elimination System Permit.
- Evaluate potential environmental risks associated with projects and proposing mitigation strategies
- Complete Permits to Install for equipment as required by new or improvement projects
- Coordinate stack testing as required by permit
- Prepare detailed reports on environmental findings, presenting data to stakeholders, and communicating environmental concerns to management
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders including government agencies, businesses, and communities
- Obtain Industrial Stormwater and Industrial Wastewater Operator Certifications
- Environmental impact assessment by evaluating the potential environmental impacts of proposed projects
- Monitor work for compliance to applicable codes and accepted engineering practices and standards
- Field verification of design parameters for construction and remediation
- Documentation of field and laboratory data
- Ensure all corporate compliance initiatives are implemented and sustained
- Support monitoring equipment and develop recommendations
- Support operational improvements of baghouses and other dust collectors, on-going improvements related to air/water quality, and kiln processing improvement input, and waste reduction
- Review and analyze operational data to evaluate and recommend changes for environmental and sustainable operation
- Ensure management is aware of trends and operational issues in a timely manner and responsible for communicating proposed solutions
- Closely monitor operational factors which affect environmental outputs and initiate corrections to be made as required
- Identify and implement projects that improve quality and/or reduce plant operating costs in a safe, sustainable and environmentally responsible manner
- Develop and facilitate employee training as needed
- Other duties as assigned
EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, related discipline or experience
- Prior experience with environmental compliance and technical knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance procedures is preferred
- Strong understanding of environmental science and engineering principles
- Resourceful, able to quickly and effectively research topics and answer questions
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, presentation abilities, and leadership capabilities
- Excellent analytical, judgement and problem-solving skills; ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Possess excellent interpersonal skills to facilitate positive working relationships with all levels of management and staff
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of employees, managers, community and regulators
- Exhibit strong planning capabilities and implementation results
- Excellent time management skills with ability to coordinate multiple tasks
- Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation
- Project management skills
- Fieldwork experience including data collection and sampling
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Valid Michigan Driver’s License
- Visual acuity, clear speech & hearing ability, cognitive ability, hand/eye coordination
- Walking, climbing stairs and occasional ladders, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, pushing, pulling, reaching, twisting, balancing, repetitive motion, driving, and squatting to perform the essential functions of this position; along with sitting for extended periods of time
- Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment as required
- Must have good hand/eye coordination and vision to safely fulfill all in-plant job requirements
- Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions and in industrial environment around hot, noisy process equipment
- Pass required background check, physical examination and drug screens
