Overview of Role:
Liquid Robotics is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team in the development of autonomous ocean robots and the associated hardware and accessories. As part of our small but highly-motivated team, you will participate in mechanical engineering design activities and will work with cross functional teams to deliver world-changing products. The successful candidate will bring significant mechanical design, project management, and product life-cycle experience to the role. This role reports directly to our Hardware Engineering Manager and could be based in Kamuela, Hawaii or Herndon, Virginia.
Responsibilities:
- Work with entire organization to establish, maintain, encourage, and enforce common design practices, standards, and policies in the Mechanical Design and Analysis discipline
- Interface with counterparts in systems, electrical, software, and operations groups to insure alignment on new and current project deliverables
- Provide oversight for change control and escalation processes
- Support the creation of hardware specifications based on user requirements
- Develop relevant prototypes to support early validation of product architectures and design solutions.
- Participate in concept and design reviews
- Review and approve designs and drawings against: general standards, design requirements, geometric tolerances, drafting practices and the applicable manufacturing process
- Support methodical root cause analysis and resolve non-compliance in part performance
- Maintain and improve Mechanical Engineering tools, design processes, and methodologies
- Support the capital procurement process by recommending tools, equipment, and facilities, needed to support the organization
- Provide technical support for the production and operations teams.
Desired Experience:
- 5+ years mechanical design experience, preferably in marine systems or the defense industry
- 10+ years professional work experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Master’s degree is a plus
- Candidate must be able to obtain a Secret clearance
- Proven ability to manage a wide range of concurrent projects and tasks
- Proven presentation and communication skills across all levels of an organization including senior management
- Proficient user of 3-D CAD, particularly Solidworks, and PDM tools to manage design databases
- Experience in Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) with focus on Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation software.
- Familiarity with PLM and other product life-cycle tools such as Arena, JIRA, and Confluence
- Ability to manage creative and cost effective electro-mechanical designs and systems (motors, controls, sensors, robotics)
- Experience designing for varied manufacturing and assembly processes such as composite materials construction, CNC machining, injection molding, cable over-molding, and sheet metal fabrication
- Experience designing with materials such as stainless steel, titanium, acetal, and fiberglass.
- Knowledge of ASME Y14.5 and ISO standards, GD&T and accepted drafting practices
- Willingness to travel to test sites when needed, up to 15%
