Senior Materials Engineer  

Judd Wire Inc., a Sumitomo Electric Group company, is looking for a Senior Materials Engineer for our Turners Falls, MA office. The engineer will develop and maintain insulation compounds used in Judd Wire products. Work with suppliers to establish and improve compounding processes, manage changes, and qualify compound formulations. Assist the business in analysis of material-related defects in order to identify problems and implement solutions.   

  

Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Support new product development for the company by contributing as a member of cross-functional teams working on new products.  Lead technical effort with internal and external team members to create new formulations capable to meet yield, performance, and cost targets. 
  • Provide technical support to Manufacturing, Purchasing, Quality and other departments concerning materials material-related product problems.  Evaluate analytical analysis and perform testing as necessary to determine root cause.  Write technical reports documenting conclusions for customers and recommend corrective actions for materials or manufacturing processes.
  • Evaluate compound manufacturing at Judd Wire and assist in identifying improvements in equipment and manufacturing processes.  Assess compounding equipment and processes at potential compound suppliers and select best candidates for capability for selected formulations.
  • Maintain existing compound formulations and specifications.  Work with internal Compounding and Purchasing teams or external suppliers to confirm ingredient availability and formulation processability.  Identify alternative ingredients or formulations which may improve quality or cost for evaluation in products and lead assessment and scale-up of updated compounds.
  • Maintain product compliance certifications for existing products.  Become familiar with major compliance regulations affecting Judd Wire product and work with Purchasing to update compliance information as needed when regulations are updated.
  • Assist with tasks and projects assigned by direct manager or senior management.  Perform other similar duties as required within the department, or as assigned by manager.  Coordinate with Engineering team to share supporting task workload as appropriate.

  

Qualifications: 

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in relevant Engineering field with applicable coursework or experience.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in the polymer manufacturing, compounding, or wire and cable industries.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of polymer materials and extrusion processing.
  • Effective technical writing skills for internal and external customers
  • Ability to work within or lead cross-functional teams to solve engineering problems.

  

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or equivalent field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the polymer manufacturing, compounding, or wire and cable industries.
  • Demonstrated experience in polymeric material development or polymer compound formulation development.
