The Director will oversee a team of about 15 that is responsible for maintaining a 99.999% uptime for j2 Cloud Backup™ infrastructure in the US.  The Backup Division manages dozens of petabytes of customer data which is located in data centers, colos and cloud deployments around the world.  This position oversees the Engineers and Administrators that develop, configure and support the systems, storage and network devices used to provide services to customers of j2 Cloud Backup worldwide.

 

The Director will serve as the primary interface with other departments on projects, initiatives or programs requiring Net Ops resources.  The Director will also serve as the escalation point with colo providers and vendors for break/fix issues, and will be responsible for successful project delivery.  This position is also responsible for capacity planning and management, incident management, procurement and vendor management.  This is primarily a hands-on tactical role, although it is expected that the Director will be responsible for continuous platform improvement through selective introduction of proven technologies based upon achievement of a positive ROI. 

 

Job Duties:

Major Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for maintaining 99.999% uptime throughout the j2 Cloud Backup production infrastructure. 
  • Responsible for the incident management and problem resolution process, including establishment of monitoring and management of alerts, escalations, and notifications.
  • Responsible for end-to-end management and maintenance of fixed assets (servers, network devices, telecom devices, storage, licenses, etc.) that are resident in Cloud Backup data centers and colos. 
  • Responsible for development, implementation and documentation of operating policies, methods, processes, measures, tools, and training programs.
  • Responsible for preparation and management of annual capital and expense budgets 
  • Oversee technical resources that support the various backup brands. 
  • Perform capacity planning for backup assets, power, network bandwidth, circuits, etc.
  • Enforce change management as required.  Drive change control and production control processes.
  • Drive vendor negotiations to improve efficiency and lower costs.
  • Define, advocate and enforce adherence to technological architectural designs and standards.
  • Collaborate closely with Network Operations, Engineering and Product Departments to plan, estimate, coordinate and manage major initiatives and projects.   
  • Serve as escalation contact for problem resolution and tracking of items using ticketing system.
  • Lead root cause analysis and continuous improvement efforts of groups within purview.

Job or Project Requirements and Experience:

·         15+ years managing infrastructure operations, including but not limited to:

·         At least 5 years in a cloud backup business using Asigra, Ahsay or equivalent technology

·         Unix Systems design and management (RHEL, Centos, et. al.)

·         Data Center, Co-lo, and Cloud Deployments (AWS, Rack Space, et. al.)

·         Data Center Power Management and Capacity Planning

·         Networking/Telecom Vendor/Carrier Negotiations and Contract Management

·         Project Management, Incident Management, Change Management, Disaster Recovery

·         10+ years experience in a highly distributed server environment leveraging open-source software.

  • 10+ years experience with capital and expense budgets in excess of $10MM
  • 5+ years as a Director or manager of multiple managers is required.
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills are required.  Candidate must supply writing samples related to previous job experience, redacted to protect proprietary information.
  • Strong management skills at a senior level and excellent interpersonal skills are required. 
  • Bachelors Degree required.  Masters Degree or MBA preferred.
