Equal parts creative producer, production manager, trade marketing specialist and sales coach, the Director of Experiential Marketing at Mashable and Ziff Davis Tech is a dynamic position overseeing the holistic development and execution of our portfolio’s events and trade marketing needs.  For the right person, this is an exciting opportunity to work autonomously to create “IRL” connections between our audience and our brands (including Mashable, PCMag, Geek.com, etc), through fun, out-of-the ordinary projects across the year, including our annual presence at SXSW and the Social Good Summit, which is produced in partnership with the UN Foundation, The UN Development Programme and the 92nd Street Y.

Key responsibilities

  • Direct Experiential Marketing efforts for ZDT&C portfolio brands. Oversee end-to-end support for multi-faceted/multi-platform projects from long-term planning to ideation, execution to performance tracking and reporting.   
  • Leverage events and other initiatives to drive revenue, managing department output to an annual revenue target. Be a source of innovative ideas that will intertwine our brands with our advertisers, building positive buzz among consumers and marketing/advertising industry insiders alike. Lead go-to-market pricing and positioning for experiential sponsor opportunities, including development of sales collateral, online teaser/recap sites, sales trainings and client meetings.   Lead the effort to grow this business.
  • Support portfolio Trade Marketing needs, working with senior management to build and execute annual strategic plan. Gather relevant inputs from primary stakeholders and analyze market and competitive landscape to create a defensible strategy that that delivers value to ZDT&C portfolio, including display, commerce, licensing, data and B2B businesses.
  • Manage various Trade initiatives across the year, including thought leadership appearances and speaking engagements for portfolio personalities, trade event activations, award submissions, swag orders, media kit management and coordination of trade press initiatives with PR team.
  • Supervise the Mashable & Ziff Davis Tech Experiential and Trade Marketing team; hire, train and supervise department staff using a player/coach approach to leadership.
  • Collaborate with Editorial and PR teams to build talent networks for portfolio events and work with internal and external contacts to help secure impactful speakers and appearances.
  • Be a steward of our brands. Sync with editorial leadership to ensure our activations harmonize with the online voice, theme and aesthetics of our portfolio brands.  Champion what makes our Company unique and wonderful in all aspects of our experiential and trade marketing projects, within our company walls, with our advertisers and with vendors, partners and talent.
  • Nurture the growth and health of the bigger team. Assist in the onboarding and development of adjacent Integrated Solutions, Sales and Editorial department staff. 
  • Actively observe and participate in broader digital media and advertising industry, including analysis of competitive landscape. Monitor trends, share insights, feed leads and contribute to the development of new ZDT products and opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required skills and experience:  

  • 5-7 years related experience in an agency or publisher environment; experience working with a range of clients simultaneously across a range of brands a plus
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing sponsor-integrated events with budgets >$1MM
  • Experience identifying, inviting and managing speakers, talent and celebrities effectively and with discretion
  • An interest and understanding of the tech, entertainment and culture content landscapes
  • Willingness to work in more than one capacity, servicing a variety of clients and interests including editorial and sales, within consumer and B2B spheres of business
  • A clear, concise writing style with a dash of showmanship; knowledge of industry best practices for sales copywriting a must
  • Meticulous attention to detail and sensitivity to deadlines
  • Demonstrated capacity to build healthy working relationships and to diplomatically balance competing opinions, priorities and directions within a highly-matrixed corporate setting
  • Availability to travel and willingness to work the occasional grind of a production cycle, as project timelines demand
  • Maintains a positive attitude under pressure; brings out the same in others. Low on drama, high on tenacity.
  • Self-starter; able thrive with minimal supervision and resourceful to seek and source support beyond immediate management layers
  • Maturity to take criticism and direction well
