The Opportunity 

Hult International Business School is seeking applications for a Research Fellow to join Hult’s Research Impact Lab (launching January 2023), to focus on shared value, purpose, business and human rights, and sustainability transitions for organizations, leaders, and entrepreneurs. They will work on projects focused on how organizations can create economic value while simultaneously addressing societal needs for the benefit of all stakeholders, and how to help leaders in private and public organizations incorporate broader purposes into everything they do. Applicants must hold a PhD in business purpose and sustainability or a related field.

The successful candidate will work on a portfolio of projects which combine organizational theory on business purpose and sustainability. This will require a range of skills both in empirical and theoretical work. The focus of the position will be to publish high quality academic research in top management journals. More specifically, the Research Fellow will be responsible for the writing of academic papers, and for ensuring successful completion of the publication process. The Research Fellow will interact with the Lab’s Director and team in implementing the Lab’s research strategy and objectives. The Research Fellow will execute all research projects in coordination with other researchers and faculty affiliated with the Lab.   

In addition, their tasks may optionally include the writing of practitioner articles, case studies, literature reviews, the development of research methodologies, the building of research surveys and interview/focus group protocols, and the write-up of reports. Non-academic tasks will be secondary to the primary goal of publishing high quality academic research.

The candidate will benefit from an active and growing research environment in a global business school, and exposure to a diverse group of faculty and researchers.

Key activities and accountabilities

  • Produce high quality academic research in top management journals (ideally, FT 50)
  • Work collaboratively with other researchers and faculty within the Lab, and with external research providers and/or partners
  • Collect, analyze, and draw insight from qualitative and quantitative data in a structured manner
  • As applicable, present research at academic conferences
  • Support Lab activities as requested by the Lab Director

Ideal Profile

  • PhD in business purpose and sustainability or a closely related discipline
  • Record of publishing in high quality peer reviewed journals, ideally FT 50 journals
  • Knowledge of relevant organizational theory
  • Practical experience within a research environment
  • Ability to develop and apply new concepts; able to formulate research questions and develop successful research proposals
  • Expertise in empirical research methods and data analysis procedures (quantitative or qualitative)
  • Expertise using data analysis packages for quantitative or qualitative data (SPSS, Stata, R, Dedoose, Atlas.ti, NVivo, or equivalent)
  • Excellent English writing skills and experience writing for academic audiences
  • Full fluency in English (written and spoken) at a native level or equivalent. Other languages are a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills (multiple projects will be running concurrently)
  • Ability to work independently and proactively with minimum supervision
  • Deadline and results oriented
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a research community and motivate others to produce a high standard of work

Further Information

This is a full-time position for 3-years in the first instance but potentially extendable based on performance. You will be based at a Hult campus located in Boston, San Francisco, London, Ashridge, or Dubai and join a global team of faculty and researchers.
