Marketing Director, Basic Books

Basic Books seeks an innovative, experienced Marketing Director to develop, lead, and oversee all aspects of marketing strategy for approximately eighty non-fiction titles per year across Basic Books and Seal Press imprints; create and oversee extensive backlist marketing initiatives; manage annual marketing budget in conjunction with Publicity Director; interface with Hachette sales team on both frontlist and backlist promotions; actively participate in the acquisitions process; and oversee two staff members.


  • Develop and oversee title-by-title marketing campaigns for Basic Books and Seal Press
  • Develop and execute advertising plans and copy for relevant titles
  • Develop and oversee academic marketing strategy
  • Develop programs for direct-to-consumer outreach in core publishing categories in concert with Hachette’s central marketing team
  • Supervise senior marketing manager and marketing assistant
  • Formulate and execute best practices for metadata for both front and backlist titles
  • Develop strategic plan for ongoing marketing of Basic’s backlist
  • Edit and oversee process for in-house materials and fact sheets for all sales meetings
  • Oversee preparation of all presentations to sales department
  • Oversee creation of two seasonal catalogs and two annual subject catalogs
  • Review and provide feedback on proposals in acquisitions meetings
  • Interact with sales on all promotions, including in-store and electronic price promotions
  • Work with special sales to develop organizational sales opportunities
  • Oversee ONIX feed process and regular metadata updates
  • Oversee Basic website and social media accounts
  • Manage Basic’s presence at trade and regional shows and academic conferences
  • Participate in inventory and first print decisions


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • A minimum of 6-8 years of book marketing experience
  • Experience in developing successful marketing campaigns for non-fiction titles
  • Excellent leadership skills, communication, budget management, organizational, prioritization and presentation skills
  • Ability to succeed in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, high level of professionalism, attention to detail, and organization
  • Extensive knowledge of social media and metadata best practices with specific emphasis on how they apply to book marketing
  • Experience managing and mentoring staff effectively
