Role Overview:

The Exchange Lab are looking for a Big Data Engineer to join our growing technology team. The successful candidate will be a key member of the team and will be involved in the design and development of our key data systems. We expect the candidate to be intelligent, enthusiastic, willing to learn and love everything tech.

 

The Exchange Lab work with a wide portfolio of technologies, from business-driven applications through to large scale analytics solutions. Successful candidates will be working in a very dynamic, solutions orientated environment. 

 

This is a hands-on role that will require the candidate to architect and build on top of an existing Big Data stack. We will also be expecting the candidate to be a strong communicator, as the role will require frequent communication with internal data analysts as well as customers of our data solutions.

 

Role Responsibilities:

Take ownership of our big data platform, working with the Business teams and key stakeholders to ensure that we meet the Organisations data needs and the technology meet the expected scale.

  • Work with the Head of Development and Project / Product team to plan and implement projects.
  • Support the whole technical team throughout the development cycle of the products.
  • Attend daily scrum meetings to ensure product features are on track as specified.

 

Skills & Experience Required:

 

  • Good degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
  • Experience in designing, running and troubleshooting EMR clusters
  • Batch and streaming job frameworks (such as Spark, Storm)
  • Demonstrable experience and excellent knowledge of the Java / Spring ecosystem including:Java 8 / Spring 4
  • Experience developing Web Services (​REST with JSON)​
  • Messaging systems , such as RabbitMQ or KAFKA.
  • Unit testing and continuous integration frameworks.
  • Experience of orchestration tools, such as Ansible
  • Leading database technology, such as mysql, SQL Server, mongoDB etc.
  • Demonstrable experience of working with key stakeholders and developers to plan and implement technical projects.
  • Knowledge of design patterns and how to apply them effectively.
  • Working with the team, conform to standards, review work.
  • Excellent communication and works positively within a team environment. ​ Capable of presenting work clearly and peer reviewing other people’s work.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and a flexible approach. ​
  • Ability to debug code with excellent problem solving.
  • Experience of working in short iterative Agile Sprints.
