Job Title:Creative Lead

Reporting to:Executive Creative Director

Key reports:Partial Reports: Junior Creative

The Creative Lead role at Wavemaker leverages media, content and technology and demands a special kind of creative - versatile, collaborative, strategic, open-minded, practical, bold, insightful, empathetic, tenacious and audience-first.

Wavemaker is creative heaven - we work across a diverse range of clients, categories and business models, partner with a diverse range of world-leading tech, media, agency and brand partners and collaborate with some of the smartest data, tech, innovation, social content and strategy specialists in London.

Creative Leads form the core part of Wavemaker UK’s Creative Team, which is based in WM Content (the social, content, partnerships and creative solutions division). The Creative Team  has a flat structure led by an ECD with each Creative Lead leading and directing their own projects with the flexibility to pair up as needed with each other or other specialists.

We are looking for a strategic, entrepreneurial creative who is curious about new tech and how to leverage it, with a leaning towards Art Director, Design, Film or visual storytelling to complement the existing skillsets in the team.


The Creative Lead’s role is two pronged.


Responsible for creating, directing, developing and selling-in future-making work with ideas that move audiences emotionally or functionally through the purchase journey.

Your impact is measured by a 30% conversion rate on creative briefs across WM Content; Awards wins including a stretch target of 1 Cannes Lions in Media or Entertainment 2020; and Wavemaker becoming known as the agency that generates fresh innovative solutions.

The Creative Lead is allocated briefs on primary clients and where required, and -

          Works to the agreed WM Content process, creative brief, deadlines and budget

          Works collaboratively and effectively with Journey Designers at the creative briefing stage

          Works collaboratively with the project team & specialists in WM Content, Wavemaker and external partners, from idea generation and development stages through to conversion, with consultancy as required during delivery

          Is responsible for the quality of the creative output and its presentation

          Required to facilitate or contribute to effective and stimulating idea generation and development sessions as needed

In addition -

          Consults creatively wherever possible on briefs as required across WM Content to help raise the creative bar and increase conversion rate

          Leads agreed briefs allocated to School of Communications Arts students, from briefing to development check-ins to feed back

          Builds relevant relationships with primary client teams, clients and external partners where relevant to help identify, generate and convert more effective and creative work

          Proactively seeks out and shares relevant innovation and creative stimulus and opportunities to WM Content, clients and client teams

          Crafts compelling Awards entries and Case Studies for agreed work to deadline, working in consultation with the Marketing & New Business team and relevant partners


Responsible for creating and leading initiatives that grow the creative & innovation ambition, ability and quality of work across WMC and the wider agency.

Here your impact is measured by becoming known in the industry for our open, stimulating and collaborative culture and ways of working; the diversity, quality and creative ambition of solutions being generated across the agency; and the appetite for creative talent to choose Wavemaker UK over more traditional agencies.

          Identify, create and lead regular initiatives that inspire and enable the wider Wavemaker agency to bolder braver work, working with partners where needed. These initiatives could cover:

          Wavemaker innovation focus areas – sprints and showcases

          Regular sharing of great ideas and inspiration

          Creative ways of working and using our office space

          How to brief

          Talent development

          How to sell ideas

          Deliver agreed thought leadership for distribution externally working with the Marketing and New Business team. This should include judging or speaking at a relevant industry event


Creative Leads each have an individual way of working and creating, with a unique skill set, but are all required to work in an open, supportive and collaborative way within and beyond the team.

The Creative Lead should actively support and develop junior creative talent in the team and the wider WM Content department. Where agreed, a Creative Lead might be required to line manage junior creative talent

All Creative Leads are required to mentor and develop upcoming School of Communications Arts 2.0 students in line with the agreed programme of activities, with a view to identifying and inspiring new creative talent for Wavemaker recruitment
