Job Title:Data Director
Reporting to:Managing Partner (direct);
Key reports:Direct Reports: none
Partial Reports: Data Directors facilitate dialogue amongst a wide group of colleagues and commission projects in consultation with TAPP. They spend a lot of time with the digital activation teams, and focus on leveraging technology that enables measurement, data capture, campaign performance analysis and audience development.
Everyone knows that data presents immense opportunities for a fundamental re-engineering of communications practice. However the challenges for clients of defining a roadmap towards a more data centric approach, including technology and compliance frequently make for slow progress.
Data Directors are Wavemaker’s pioneering team of consultants purposed to help clients and colleagues make the application of 1st, 2nd and 3rd party data tangible. We do this through a combination of inspiration, technical understanding and tenacity. We work with colleagues to articulates a compelling but achievable vision and project manage to effect real change.
Data Directors need to be able to speak technically to delivery partners but in jargon-free English to clients and WM colleagues.
Each Data Director has a small portfolio of core clients with occasional projects supporting new business and ring-fenced projects on other WMUK clients
Key areas of responsibility:
e.g. Firstly, you will build understanding of client data assets and aspirations to complement continually refreshed understanding of vendor and groupm/WM offers, in both instances investing in relationship building.
e.g. Secondly, you will be expected to define opportunities for use of data. These can be from the smallest tactical application of web analytics to strategic re-specification of entire tech stack
e.g. Thirdly, you will be expected to project manage delivery. The devil is always in the detail so overcoming barriers as they present themselves will be vital
Develop and maintain a deep understanding of clients’ own data (e.g. sales data, web analytics, CRM lists etc.) and client-specific 3rd party data (e.g. tracking studies) and Wavemaker-bought or owned resources (e.g. buzz monitoring, competitor spend, competitor web shares) relevant to clients
Develop and maintain a strategic understanding of Wavemaker-accessible data sources (eg Hitwise, TGI Clickstream), tools (e.g. Prism, Ensight, DisplayLift) and approaches (segmentation, data merging) including from the wider group (e.g. [m]Platform) and preferred partners (e.g. key media owners or 3rd party data providers, DMPs)
Define the potential for using any of these assets in pursuit of insight, execution and evaluation, articulate and then engage with communications planning team and client to develop, agree and gain commitment to business case for using data this way
Lead use of 1st party data and DMPs to define audience architecture
Project manage delivery, drawing on internal/external specialists (esp TAPP) to help build and sell-in proposals to clients
Champion best practice use of standard tools in routine planning throughout the wider client team
Engage with the community of Data Directors (communications planning, performance, activation) to review vendors, debate and drive continuous improvement; rotating chair of monthly community meetings
Other Responsibilities or Expectations:
Data Directors are self-starters and expected to be pro-active in spotting and developing opportunities
