Linux Security Engineer

Information Security London, United Kingdom

Job Specification – Information Security Engineer (Linux)

This is a rare opportunity for a motivated, meticulous, and technically-minded person to join the Information Security Engineering team of a financial research institution. The role involves working with sophisticated systems security technologies, and ensuring that policies and procedures are observed to maintain and improve the security posture of the company.

The Company

The company is a well-established financial research and support company located in central London.  Working with the company is rewarding, challenging, and intellectually stimulating. The working environment is positive and informal: there is no dress code, and people are judged on the quality of their work rather than rigid adherence to fixed hours.  The company truly believe that it is quality that counts.

Information Security is vital to the business due to the nature of the intellectual property that the company generates on its clients’ behalf. Therefore information security is fully backed up by top level management and understood to be important by everyone in the company.

The Role

The role involves managing existing enterprise systems security solutions as well as researching and implementing new ones. It also requires being involved in the daily security engineering and operations by responding to and following up any security alerts, and dealing with different departments within the company to ensure that the security element in any change control process adheres to the security policies and procedures.

This role will suit someone who has a real interest in systems security in general, and a demonstrable aptitude for applying security concepts and their skills to solve real problems. Although, the candidate will specialise in systems implementation, auditing and identity related security technologies, the candidate is expected to get involved with and learn the security technologies and business processes across the spectrum in order to gain a better understanding of information flow and providing end to end consistent security.

The majority of information security work within the company is derived from real-world business and technical challenges, with little room for red tape compliance check box regimes.

 The Individual

Candidates applying for this role should have extensive experience with commercial Linux distributions (preferably RedHat, CentOS or SLES) along with a thorough understanding of the solutions available for deploying, securing and auditing compliance of Linux based systems in an enterprise environment. Advance knowledge configuring and tuning SELinux, IPtables and Auditd. Experience with either Perl or Python scripting would also be advantageous.

The ideal candidate will also have experience of managing enterprise security products such as Antivirus, Data Leakage Prevention tools, Endpoint Protection, Identity Management, IPS/IDS and SIEM both on Linux and Windows platforms.

This role requires candidates with drive, energy and a passion for Information Security technologies with attention to detail and a desire to analyse situations rather than just follow instructions blindly.  The daily operations aspect of the role involves liaising with users up to the executive level, so good interpersonal and communication skills are very important for this role. Any experience that demonstrates these qualities will be of interest to us.

A degree in Computer Science, Security, Engineering or related disciplines is required. The company is looking for candidates with at least a 2:1 in their degree and A-Levels equivalent to at least BBB.

It is expected that the successful applicant will have a minimum of five years of experience working in a systems infrastructure, security operations or IT support role. Past experience within medium to large sized investment banks, hedge funds and asset management companies would be beneficial.

Salary and compensation package will depend on experience and the skills the candidate has to offer but will be in line with expectations at a top-flight financial institution.
