About Great Oaks Charter School - Newark

Great Oaks Charter School - Newark opened its doors in 2011, initially providing 133 6th and 7th grade students with a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, supported by two hours of small group tutorial, daily. Great Oaks has added a grade each year. Prior to the merger it served over 460 students across two campuses – a middle school campus in the downtown Teachers Village complex, serving 6th – 8th grades and a high school campus in the downtown Lincoln Park area serving 9th – 12th grades. The first senior class will graduate in June of 2017. Great Oaks has seen dramatic academic growth, with its students placing top in the state in average Math SGP (student growth percentile).

About Newark Legacy Charter School

Founded as a BES (Building Excellent Schools) charter school, Newark Legacy Charter School started as an independent charter school focused on literacy and parent and community involvement. Newark Legacy opened its doors in 2010 with Kindergarten and 1st grade. In 2014, it was chosen as one of only three charter launch schools across the city, serving a large number of Newark students in the former Madison Elementary School building. Prior to the merger, Newark Legacy served over 640 students in Pre-K through 6th grade in this historic building in the South Ward of Newark.


Job Description 


The High School Math Director of Curriculum & Instruction is an integral part of the high school instructional team and will help drive math growth at Great Oaks Legacy Charter School by coaching and observing teachers, overseeing the mathematics curriculum and assessments, and supporting a culture of data-driven instruction.

Coaching Responsibilities

  • Observe high school Math teachers and conduct feedback/coaching sessions on a weekly basis for the purpose of providing constructive feedback and recommendations.
  • Review math curriculum and assessments to ensure common core alignment of curriculum and rigorous content standards that drive student growth and promote college readiness.
  • Foster a DDI culture among the math team, in which data is used to identify trends in assessment results, analyze student growth, including content mastery and skill gaps, and drive the continuation, modification, or addition of math strategies to move students to higher levels of achievement.
  • Facilitate small and large group discussions between and among the leadership team, teachers, and tutors on issues related to math instruction.
  • Collaborate with members of the math team and school leadership to conduct school-wide math needs assessments
  • In conjunction with leadership team, develop specific, measurable goals for the math team, and identify specific skills, strategies, and programmatic activities to support or extend school-wide learning.
  • In conjunction with leadership team, coordinate math department meetings and plan professional development sessions for the purpose of providing targeted support to math teachers, teaching assistants, and Tutor Corps members.
  • Work with general and special education teachers to develop student interventions and modifications based on data from SMI, ANet, and other data sources.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience teaching and driving student growth in an urban school setting.
  • Experience coaching teachers as a grade level or department chair strongly preferred.
  • Belief that all students have what it takes to be successful.
  • Relentless work ethic.
  • Demonstrated mastery of Mathematics content knowledge.
  • Curriculum development experience strongly preferred.
  • Leadership experience in a high performing, No Excuses school is strongly preferred.
