Economist / Data Scientist

Data & Analytics Mill Valley, California

Do you have a passion for labor economics and telling stories using data? Do you love doing applied statistical research and developing insights from data? Do you love writing for a general audience, and want to share your research findings with media and the public?

Glassdoor has an opening for an Economist / Data Scientist within our growing Economic Research group. The position will work directly with our Chief Economist and decision science team, and will be a highly visible role on our research group at (our company’s think tank).

You will help maintain our Python and R models, develop and publish insights and commentary about trends in the labor market, and be a spokesperson for Glassdoor. In addition, you’ll do statistical research on our database of real-time job postings along with proprietary user-generated reviews and insights that spans more than 740,000 employers.

We’re looking for an economist / data scientist who can be a superstar in three basic areas:

  • Maintain our Python and R Models: Manage the SQL, Python and R code for our team’s models behind our data products (including the Glassdoor “Local Pay Reports”). You’ll be the expert who maintains our code, and helps us develop new forecasting and prediction models in the future.
  • Write Research Reports: You will help brainstorm creative research ideas for short reports, blog posts, and data visualizations using Glassdoor’s salary, company ratings and job openings data, as well as official BLS and other third-party data. Your job is to help fill with brilliant analysis and insights and help develop data-driven products. You’ll execute original research projects from end to end.
  • Serve as a Spokesperson: Like a think tank, we do a lot of writing and speaking, and we need a well-rounded economist / data scientist who can both write code and explain economic ideas clearly and in simple terms. That means doing telephone, radio and TV interviews about your research.  You will also be our Sales team’s go-to expert when Glassdoor clients have questions about the labor market and hiring.

  • 3-5 years of professional experience as an economist / data scientist, preferably in a public policy, consulting or tech environment.
  • A master’s degree in Economics, Public Policy, Political Science or a related field is required. (Ph.D. is not required for this role).
  • Requires some knowledge of SQL query language. You’ll need to demonstrate that you can write basic code in one of the standard statistical packages such as R, Stata, Python, etc.
  • Unlike most economists, it is essential that you are able to write clearly for a lay audience. Be ready to share your best sole-authored writing samples with us. Writing and speaking is a critical skill for this role.
  • Must be comfortable in a relatively extroverted role. You’ll have to occasionally speak with journalists, do interviews, possibly travel to meet with company clients with sales teams, and give occasional presentations about Glassdoor research.
  • You should be able to work independently and complete large-scale research projects over a 2-3 month period. We are a small group and need someone who is entrepreneurial, can solve their own problems, bring their own research ideas to the table, and finish quality projects on time.
  • Knowledge of standard data science and “big data” tools such as predictive machine learning methods, regression trees, random forest models, lasso methods, etc. is a plus but not required. Our research can be as technical as you’re willing to go—the sky is the limit in terms of professional development in this role.
