Economic Research Fellow

Internships Mill Valley, California

Glassdoor is searching for currently enrolled Ph.D. students to serve as a Research Fellow in Labor Economics for Summer 2018. The position will work closely with our Chief Economist and Data Science team to study our large database of jobs and user-generated content. The position is a unique opportunity to conduct applied labor research using Glassdoor’s proprietary database of millions of salary reports, company ratings from more than 500,000 employers, and more than 20 million real-time job postings from around the world.

What You’ll Do

The goal for the position is to develop and execute one to three academic-style research projects utilizing Glassdoor jobs, salaries and company review data over the course of the summer. The findings of these projects may lead to an academic publication based on Glassdoor’s unique labor market data. Candidates will research independently over the summer, and will present their findings at the end of their term.

On a day to day basis, you’ll be formulating your own research questions, querying our SQL database, writing R or Python code for your analysis, and summarizing your findings in plain language reports for a non-technical audience. Examples of past economics research reports are available at

This is a unique opportunity for young economists looking to break into private-sector roles in the tech world, offering valuable experience inside a fast-growing technology company.

Position Requirements

The ideal candidate should be currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in Economics and have an interest in applied labor economics or a related field. Candidates must have strong quantitative skills and some experience with SQL and either R or Stata. This is a technical position—you’ll need to write your own code.

Experience with basic machine learning techniques such as regression trees, lasso model selection methods, random forest models, and other predictive statistical methods is a plus (but not necessary)—this position is an opportunity to spend the summer learning some of these methods from our Data Science team. Interest in forecasting and time series econometrics, online jobs data, and some experience working with public microdata files such as Census CPS is a plus.

This position is a paid fellowship, and compensation is designed to replace existing Ph.D. program summer stipends to allow a full-time research position. Glassdoor offers a casual workplace, free catered lunch, video games, and a scenic waterfront campus just north of San Francisco in Mill Valley, CA.
