Assistant Merchant, Grocery/Frozen/Dairy - FoodKick

Recipe for Success:  The FoodKick Assistant Merchant will help develop and implement strategies to grow sales and margin within a number of Grocery/Consumables categories.  The Assistant Merchant will form relationships with new and existing vendors to build promotional calendars, and to develop strategic product assortments within key categories.  The ideal candidate will have a background as a Buyer or Merchant, have a passion for food, and is both analytical and creative. An understanding of ecommerce would be helpful but not necessary.

  • Develops and implements strategic plans for product assortments within the Grocery, Frozen, and Dairy categories, specifically focusing on certain categories within Pantry, Dairy, Frozen Foods, and General Merchandise.
  • Supports Category Merchant in maintenance and implementation of promotional calendars, as well as in the development of category-specific promotional strategies
    • Develops framework for scalable promotional planning across a broad number of brands and categories
    • Works with storefront merchandiser to develop content needed to feature planned promotions
    • Implements promotional pricing, as well as regular base price updates
    • Maintains ongoing post-promotional reporting, and monthly vendor invoicing and billbacks
  • Works with vendors to develop sales plans, programs and promotions that meet both organizations' goals and objectives
  • Develops and implements marketing and merchandising strategies for new product and brand launches
  • Sources new producers in search of innovative products and trends
  • Maintains ongoing data analysis of competitive pricing and promotional strategies
  • Reviews Gross Margin discrepancies regularly and works with teams cross-functionally to correct those discrepancies


Key ingredients 

  • BS/BA
  • Minimum one (1) year in a Buying or Merchandising role
  • Strategic thinker with proven ability to be creative, resourceful, pro-active and innovative
  • Must be open-minded, able to switch priorities based on business needs
  • Strong writing, presentation, and communication skills
  • Comfortable juggling and coordinating multiple projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrated working experience in developing marketing strategies, vendor and product negotiations, new product selection, and promotional planning
  • Experience with building new processes and improving existing processes
  • Comfortable working within a fast-paced, start-up environment
  • Financial acumen and analytical skills
  • Pass FreshDirect’s pre-employment testing: background check and drug test screening
  • Must love food!
