Pension & Benefits Analyst

Purpose of role


The Pension & Benefits Analyst is responsible for pension and group benefits administration for Canada and/or the U.S.  The incumbent must learn a significant amount of Canadian and U.S. legislation applicable to this highly-specialized field and be able to apply learnings to a variety of special cases and in order to conduct analysis for business outcomes.


 Key responsibilities /accountabilities


  • Group Benefits (employee flex plan, medical, dental, etc.) – new hires, terminations, leaves of absence, annual open enrolment, maintain tracking sheets
  • Retirement Plans – new hires, terminations, in-service withdrawals (loans, hardships), retirements, retirement estimates, pension calculations
  • Retiree medical – process changes in retirees’ medical benefits, track and process retiree payments, follow-up in the event of non-payment, assist with annual rate adjustments, letters, participant inquiries/customer service
  • Customer service – support employees and former employees with their inquiries (answer questions, navigate complicated scenarios), meet with employees to discuss their matters
  • Compliance – plan member statements, non-discrimination testing, regulatory filings, etc.
  • Special cases – apply knowledge and experience to non-standard situations to resolve
  • Data management - records completeness and validation, ensure that all supporting documentation is in order (benefit elections, beneficiary designations, etc.)
  • Insurer premium billings/invoices – check premiums/fees and process for payment
  • Analytics – gather data and perform calculations/conduct analysis to aid in the development of business recommendations and decisions
  • Support administration on pension and benefit special projects
  • Other group benefits, pension/retirement savings administration or analysis, as necessary


Key qualifications /competencies


  • Post secondary degree or college diploma preferred
  • Experience in/knowledge of employee benefits preferred
  • Aptitude for working with systems (Workday, other web-based self-service portals, vendor websites & tools, etc.)
  • Ability to work well under pressure and time constraints
  • Must be competent in handling large data files, particularly in EXCEL and WORD
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and strives for accuracy
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellence in basic mathematics is required
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt when assignments change
