This is a hybrid position based out of Feeding America’s Chicago office location. At Feeding America, we believe in offering a flexible work environment. Employees can be in the office an average of 2 days a week (when not travelling for work) and work from home on other days. Employees also have access to a 30-day “work anywhere” program during the course of each calendar year that can be combined with PTO and/or holidays.

The Opportunity

As a thought leader and highly skilled, hands-on Data Engineer, this role demands a deep understanding of data architecture, cloud technologies, and Structured Query Language (SQL), with a proven ability to translate business requirements into robust, scalable data solutions. Strategic thinker who can develop and execute a comprehensive data vision while also diving deep into the tactical aspects of data engineering.

Compensation

Here at Feeding America national organization, equity is central to our mission and is an integral part of our compensation policies and structures. Historically, systemic racism and sexism in all aspects of our society, including compensation practices, has led to pay inequities that negatively impact people of color, women, and especially women of color. These practices include basing salary offers on previous compensation and negotiating salary offers. As such, we maintain transparent salary ranges and clearly defined practices for how our team, including new hire salary offers, moves through these ranges. You can expect us to offer the best salary up front based on these clearly defined pay practices with little room for negotiation. The salary range listed below represents the starting to mid-point salaries for positions and comparable roles at this level at our organization and candidates should expect to be offered a salary near the starting point of the range that is listed on the job posting. We make exceptions for highly experienced (multiple years of at-level experience) new hires in accordance with our pay practices. Once hired, employees have the opportunity to progress through salary ranges via regular merit increases and step promotions. 


Salary Range: $125,000 to $130,000 Based on Experience



Responsibilities:

  1. Strategy and Leadership: Develop and implement a long-term data architecture strategy aligned with business objectives. Provide architectural direction to integration engineers to direct the future of architecture and data management for the organization.
  2. Data Architecture: Design and optimize data models, schemas, and metadata to support complex data pipelines and analytical workloads.
  3. Cloud Infrastructure: Leverage Azure cloud platform to build and maintain scalable data solutions. Proficiently utilize Azure cloud databases, data warehouses, and related services.
  4. Data Engineering: Develop and execute ETL/ELT processes to efficiently extract, transform, and load data from various sources into target systems. Optimize data pipelines for performance and cost-effectiveness.
  5. Data Management: Ensure data quality, integrity, and security through robust data governance practices. Implement data monitoring and alerting mechanisms to proactively identify and resolve data issues.
  6. SQL Proficiency: Write complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and functions to analyze and manipulate large datasets. Optimize SQL code for performance and efficiency.
  7. Collaboration: Partner with analysts, application development team, and business stakeholders to understand data requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
  8. Problem Solving: Identify and resolve complex data challenges through innovative solutions. Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.


Required Experience and Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of hands-on experience in data engineering and/or data warehousing, with a strong focus on SQL and cloud-based data platforms.
  • 7+ years of experience building cloud data solutions (Azure, Google Cloud Platform).
  • Expertise in Azure cloud platform, including Azure SQL Database, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Factory, and other relevant services; knowledge of data warehousing and data lake concepts. Familiarity with Informatica Intelligent Cloud Services (IICS), a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills; proven ability to design and implement complex data architectures and pipelines; deploying end to end solutions with a cloud platform analytics services including storage, permissions, private cloud, database services, virtual machines, and parallel processing technologies.
  • Strong SQL skills, including performance optimization techniques.
  • Experience with data modeling, ETL/ELT processes, and data quality best practices.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Competent and proficient understanding of business tools and platforms. Working familiarity with SharePoint, Microsoft Office productivity tools, Tableau, a plus.
