Highlights of the job

We are hiring one (1) full time, temporary (up to 12 months) Engineering Technologist position working out of Edmonton, AB.

 

This role involves providing information and advice on water and sewer servicing, maintaining as-built information within the City of Edmonton, and ensuring compliance with bylaws and standards.

What you’d be responsible for

  • Review and Compliance of Engineering and Stormwater Management Plans
    • Check for conflicting infrastructure and utilities horizontally and vertically
    • Coordinate with other EPCOR departments, City departments, utility companies and other municipalities to ensure the water and sewer services do not conflict with other proposed utilities
    • Review utility right-of-way, restrictive covenants and land title documents
  • Advise on Procedures for New Service Applications of Residential and Commercial Developments
  • Check plot and building plans for elevations and service connection options
  • Check for conflicting infrastructure and utilities horizontally and vertically. Advise on potential conflicts
  • Guide the customer through the water and sewer service process by acting as the one point contact from the time of development permit application to the final service installation
  • Accept payments for new water, sanitary, foundation and storm services
  • Create new jobs along with service applications and construction work order numbers
  • Send construction orders including all required agreements within two working days of receiving payment
  • Collect, update and maintain water and sewer as-built information through historical data and/or data requested from field personnel and update inventory systems (Posse, Micro Station and Geofit) as required
  • Advise water and sewer applicants by telephone or by written response with servicing information and other drainage related inquiries
  • Prepare and submit monthly servicing statistics
  • Provide the existing water and sewer servicing locations to utility locators, developers, contractors, builders and home owners
  • Advise on EPCOR and City of Edmonton standards, bylaws, guidelines and storm water management requirements
  • Assist and coordinate with other EPCOR departments and City departments by providing water and sewer service locations, Water and Drainage bylaws and standards for the following:
  • Drainage Development Notifications
  • Encroachments
  • Park Circulations

 

  • Review and approve private development drawings and assign application numbers
  • Perform Q&A on as-built information and make recommendations for the “Final Acceptance Certificate”
  • Provide ongoing input on process improvements as it pertains to the Water and Sewer Servicing (WASS) group and the Water and Drainage Planning sections
  • Prepare and send out additional water projects as required (water service abandonments, renewals, new service, reconnections, etc.)

What’s required to be successful

  • A two year diploma in Civil or Engineering Design & Drafting Technology from a recognized technical institution is required
  • 0-3 years of directly related experience
  • Membership with ASET as a CET (Certified Engineering Technologist) or eligibility for membership
  • Knowledge of water and sewer systems including Engineering Design and construction of municipal utility services
  • Knowledge of construction standards and methods in the field (ie. MH, Bridging etc.)
  • General knowledge of internal mechanical plumbing and building systems
  • Knowledge of Drainage Bylaws, Drainage Design & Construction Standards, Lot Grading Guidelines , Provincial Legislation, Condo Act, Zoning Bylaws, EPCOR Water Construction Standards, Building and Plumbing Codes
  • Ability to calculate inverts, obverts and crossing elevations for sanitary and storm services
  • Understanding of various types of engineering plans
  • Ability to interpret surface contours and elevations
  • Ability to identify servicing conflicts by reviewing other utility plans
  • Provide technical customer service to the public
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively communicate with the public and internal and external customers
  • Detailed knowledge of municipal and civil design and drafting
  • Strong interpersonal and problem solving skills and the ability to work in a team environment
  • A high level of time management skills and the ability to multi-task in order to meet deadlines

Class: T1

Wage: Starting at $39.23 per hour (Final Wage and Step will be determined at the time of selection and based on a combination of factors as outlined in the Collective Agreement)

Hours of work: 80 hours biweekly
