Developmental Editor, Spruce Home (Plants)

Editorial/Content United States

This assignment posting is for an Agency Worker opportunity with Dotdash Meredith. The Agency Worker is paid by a staffing agency employer. Agency Workers will receive a W2 from the staffing agency reporting their earnings for tax purposes.

As Developmental Editor on The Spruce Home you will help take our content to the next level by improving the work of our remote editors, who update our sizable cache of existing articles to enhance the reader experience and accuracy of all of our content. You will review the work of remote contract editors, ensuring all articles meet quality standards, follow project instructions, and adhere to brand guidelines. You will also offer editors feedback and revisions to improve the overall editing process. The rate for this role is $30/hour, and we are looking for candidates who can commit to 10 hours per week.

Assignment Responsibilities
  • You will review and edit updated articles, ensuring that the editor’s work follows the specific project instructions, brand and Dotdash Meredith guidelines, and puts the reader first—all while meeting Dotdash Meredith standards for quality content.
  • You will coach newly hired editors throughout their first few projects, providing them feedback on each article they update as well as notes for revisions, if necessary.
  • You will spot check veteran editors’ work to ensure they still meet the Dotdash Meredith standards, and provide them with feedback.
Skills/Experience:
  • At least 5 years of experience writing/editing in the home renovation space, preferably for a digital brand
  • Applicants should be well-versed in several of the following: decor trends, event planning, cleaning and organizing, home renovations, and gardening
  • Strong grasp of grammar and AP style
  • Detail-oriented, deadline-focused, and able to work independently and accurately
  • Able to easily adopt an established brand voice and adhere to brand and style guidelines like a pro
  • Great editor, and consider yourself “nit-picky” at times. You know the difference between an en-dash and an em-dash
  • Comfortable working in a content management system and can work quickly, independently, and accurately
  • Excellent communicator, and are comfortable giving both positive and negative feedback to a team member.
  • Have an undergraduate degree
  • Work well remotely
  • You have access to a smartphone, computer (not a tablet), and a secure internet connection
