Our client is seeking a Safety Specialist who will be responsible for planning, directing, and implementing organization safety and environmental programs to ensure a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment by performing the responsibilities below either personally or through supervisors.   

Roles and Responsibilities  

  

  • Plans, implements and evaluates safety and environmental policies and procedures in compliance with state (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality), and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules and regulations. Observes employees at work to determine compliance with safety and environmental policies and procedures.
     
  • Inspects all waste storage areas, facilities work environment, machinery, and equipment periodically to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, determines corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.
     
  • Plans, implements and evaluates programs to train managers and employees in work site safety practices, fire prevention, proper waste disposal, and correct handling techniques for chemicals, toxins, equipment, and other materials. Oversees AED Certification and emergency response program.
     
  • Evaluates unsafe conditions according to factors such as severity of potential injury, likelihood of recurrence, employers’ accident record, evidence of voluntary compliance and waste spillage/release. Recommends changes in policies and procedures to prevent chemical spillage/release accidents and illness.
  • Leads the investigation of chemical spillage/release accidents and injuries. Interviews supervisors and employees to obtain facts about work practice or accidents. Writes report and notifies management as required.
     
  • Reviews log of reportable accidents and preventive actions taken to prevent reoccurrence. Compiles and submits accident reports required by regulatory agencies. Maintains safety files and records such as MSDS files.
     
  • Tests noise levels and measures air quality. Administers hearing tests to employees. Directs forklift operator training and performs operator certification. Enforces use of safety equipment. Maintains all safety related equipment and PPE inventory such as shoes, eye wear, and first-aid kits.
     
  • Coordinate waste disposal between departments and outside environmental waste disposal company. Maintains required documents for compliance with local, state and federal agencies. Obtain necessary samples and analysis to maintain documents for this process. Performs waste determination and classification for waste generated by company.
     
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

  

Required Experience & Skills  

  

  • High School Diploma or GED and one to two years related experience and/or training.
  • Ability to operate a forklift and personal lift equipment. Ability to set-up and operate equipment to sample noise, air quality and respirator fit testing. Ability to operate audio/visual equipment. Ability to operate the fit-testing, gas monitoring and noise monitoring systems.
  • Must be computer competent and possess strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and MasterControl.
  • Current CPR/AED certifications preferred.
