CONTRIBUTING TO THE CMPA

The Safe Medical Care Insights & Thought Leadership (SMCInTL) department advances the CMPA’s mission by integrating internal and external data sources, transforming evidence into novel insights, actionable knowledge, and impactful resources to support the safety of medical care. The department studies historical data to identify individual provider, team and system factors associated with medical-legal risk, researches trends, and evaluates the performance and impact of education programs. The department synthesizes evidence and disseminates its research findings by authoring reports, risk management communications, and educational materials in collaboration with other departments. The department also responds to internal and external requests for data analysis.

The Evidence Synthesis Unit (ESU) contributes to the work of the Safe Medical Care Insights & Thought Leadership department by developing research questions and conducting detailed literature searches, focus group interviews, and systematic reviews to inform the direction of research strategies used to explore and analyze the medico-legal data repository of the CMPA. The team works closely with the Data Capture, Data Insights, and Knowledge Translation teams within SMCInTL to inform members, stakeholders, and the general public of ways to reduce medico-legal risk and improve patient safety. This work further provides context and background to inform and support the work of Medico-Legal Services; this can include providing briefs and detailed reports that investigate and inform the current state of clinical evidence and/or the health policy landscape. The ESU is the principal generator of peer-reviewed publications and uses the following tools: environmental scans, rapid evidence reviews, systematic literature reviews and critical appraisal using standard tools as per best practice. This team will employe qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods approaches to analyze CMPA and external data.
