About the Job
Want to break stuff? Want to do things nobody has done before? Join the Hardware Test Team at OTTO Motors! We experiment with state-of-the-art AMR technology to discover its strengths and weaknesses.
The Hardware Test Team is responsible for devising and enacting test plans that provide real actionable data that directly influences product design, configuration, and standards compliance. The team is responsible for executing system and subsystem level reliability tests to further improve the industrial strength of our product line. You will be an integral part of a team focused on providing real data that makes a significant impact on the way design choices are made at OTTO Motors.
We will need you to always be ready to think outside the box, troubleshoot problems, and desire to apply your technical skills to break down challenges & problems, and work on them one at a time. We will need you to focus on the purpose of the tests in hand, while having the bigger picture in mind how your contributions will result in a positive impact for our engineering design and safety of our products.
Your primary responsibilities will include:
  • Developing and/or adapting Vehicle Dynamics simulation models using multibody modeling software
  • Developing and executing test plans for validation of system functionality and performance
  • Generating test reports that concisely and accurately describe the testing and results
  • Continuously studying our industrial AMRs; how they work, and how they fail
  • Participating in test plan reviews and contribute to the team’s testing strategy
  • Commissioning, integration & support of mock workflows at our test facility to enable testing of different sample use cases as well as project specific workflows
  • Developing and executing test plans for stressing and braking systems and subsystems with the goal of improving hardware reliability
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and report industrial robot failure
  • Comprehend and apply standards that pertain to AMR performance and testing
  • Gather and analyze data with excel, ubuntu terminal commands, bash and python scripts
  • Solving new and challenging technical problems related to all of the above
Additional responsibilities include:
  • Consulting other departments on vehicle dynamics, reliability, and how to design fruitful tests
  • Troubleshooting software & hardware issues using internal tools 
  • Developing & maintaining reference documentation & tools that help improve the HW test team’s ability to test industrial robots
  • Optimizing vehicle performance through analysis, simulation, and experimentation
  • Communicating technical details to the broader team;
  • Authoring new product requirements based on the lessons learned from your design and commissioning activities;
  • Work with Solidworks CAD software to design test fixtures and calculate mass properties of various test setups
Required skills & Experience:
  • Highly detail oriented individual
  • Not being afraid to challenge assumptions or the status quo
  • Strong communicator, verbal and written
  • Self-motivated and well organized
  • 3 years of relevant work experience (including co-op/internship)
  • College Diploma / University Degree in an Engineering Discipline or relevant technical field
  • Interpretation & design analysis of mechanical drawings and electrical schematics
  • Planning & organization (how to approach and solve a problem, work breakdown to achieve the end goal, etc.)
  • Ability to stay focused on the overall goal; effectively analyzing the value of going down rabbit trails
Nice to Have:
Prior experience in vehicle dynamics analysis and/or testing
  • Experience with Multibody modeling packages like MAPLESIM, Simspace and ADAMS
  • Experience with CAD/Solidworks models
  • Interest in learning and/or prior experience with component vibration and HALT/HASS testing
  • Interest in developing systems integration skillset and PLC programming
  • Exposure to working with Linux based OS (Operating System)
  • Authoring and modifying software code (python, C++, or other)
