Description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Carries out multi-step synthesis, isolation, purification, and characterization of small organic compounds
  • Designs efficient routes to target molecules
  • Interprets SAR and designs analogues with improved properties
  • Conducts literature searching to design synthetic routes, problem-solve synthetic issues and understand the competitive landscape
  • Presents cross-functional research at departmental and project team meetings
  • Performs scale-up of key intermediates and compounds
  • Is responsible for ensuring compliance with safe laboratory practices and EH&S guidelines
  • Contributes to new inventions
  • May be responsible for communicating progress, milestones, changes in timelines, etc. to all key stakeholders
  • Is a team-player, effectively working with scientists across different disciplines to succeed together
  • Is a role model for junior staff
  • May author technical documents in support of patent applications and scientific manuscripts, etc.

 

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: 

Education:

  • Ph.D. degree in synthetic organic/medicinal chemistry; or,
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

 

Experience:

  • Requires a minimum two years of related experience with a Ph.D. degree or 10 years of related experience with a B.S. or M.S. degree
  • Hands-on experience with a wide variety of synthetic organic chemistry methods
  • Significant experience with NMR, LC/MS, purification using column chromatograph and other techniques
  • Solid track record in synthetic organic and/or medicinal chemistry
  • Solid experience in property-based and in vivo driven compound optimization
  • Experience searching chemical/scientific databases
  • Experience working in a cross-functional team environment
  • Experience with safe laboratory practices and EH&S guidelines

 

Technical Skills:

  • Able to generate new experimental protocols that may require developing new methods or techniques
  • Help troubleshoot technical problems for colleagues or CRO scientists
  • Propose changes to workflows that improve reliability or efficiency across a project
  • Able to conduct regular work without daily supervision
  • Makes recommendations to project teams that influence near-term program tactics
  • May participate in interdisciplinary project teams or sub-teams within MyoKardia; may also provide support to extramural collaborations
  • Expected to present results and recommendations in project team and company meetings
  • Generates sections of technical reports/manuscripts/patents under the supervision of a primary author
