This position is responsible for working with the Program Communications team to develop and carry out media strategies for Earthjustice litigation and policy work, and deepen and expand the press coverage of the organization’s key issues.  The press secretary will pitch stories to national and regional papers, magazines and long-form media outlets, TV and radio stations, online outlets, and other influential media outlets. The press secretary will report directly a national communications strategist while also providing media support to several regional communications strategists. This person would identify media opportunities and pursue them; pitch enterprise, in-depth coverage of Earthjustice’s many issues; develop media lists; and build relationships with journalists who may write about the issues. The Press Secretary would write and place op-eds, blogs, and letters to the editor on behalf of Earthjustice leaders and clients/partners, and contribute to the Earthjustice blog and website.  This person will also focus on ways to develop interactive and creative digital assets and help produce social media content. Please note that Earthjustice is hiring three press secretaries and each will be assigned to one of our broad issue areas – Climate & Clean Energy, Healthy Communities, and Lands, Oceans & Wildlife. This position is ideally located in San Francisco, CA or Washington, DC, with option for New York, NY.


National, Regional and Online Media Relationships (60%):

  • Works with National Communications Strategist and communications team, litigators and program staff, and clients and coalition partners to build, shape, and pitch media strategies for a range of environmental issues.
  • Provides press support to Regional Communications Strategists on regional fights that fall under broad issue areas.
  • Writes and distributes press releases and background materials on cases of interest to national, regional, and web media.
  • Develops and maintains media lists and contacts and monitors media coverage.
  • Manages vendors for communications content (digital ads, photos, etc.)

Message Development (20%)

  • Works with program staff to assess media needs and develop appropriate media message.
  • Develops talking points for program staff and prepares staff for media interviews.
  • Develops and presents media trainings for partners, clients and staff around the country, as needed and requested.
  • Works as needed with local coalitions to strengthen advocacy efforts, assess media needs, develop messaging and media strategy

Administrative (20%):

  • Develops and maintains media lists and contacts and monitors media coverage.
  • Manages vendors for communications content (digital ads, photos, etc.)


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, Political Science, or Marketing preferred.
  • Three to five years’ experience in reporting or media relations with emphasis on environment or social justice causes preferred.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience pitching media
  • Proven ability to develop relationships with journalists.
  • Social media experience and skills, especially Twitter.
  • Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
