State Government Editor
WRAL News seeks an experienced state government and politics editor to oversee daily and enterprise reporting with a special focus on coverage for WRAL.com, the state’s most read news website. This individual will assign and oversee our experienced and well-sourced NC Capitol team already in place.
The right person for this position will have keen curiosity for and a deep knowledge of state government, politics and all that falls under those umbrellas. The editor will be responsible for ensuring WRAL is covering every daily event of import happening at the state house, along with managing the production of in-depth enterprise stories involving the legislature and beyond.
The successful candidate will have a finger on the pulse of the state house and be able to recognize stories that matter, as well as ones that demand deeper coverage. The editor should have the breadth of understanding to both be able to explain the “inside baseball” of why a certain bill is stymied in committee and also break down why proposed changes to a law will actually have great impact on North Carolina citizens. Attention to detail along with the ability to see the big picture of coverage are equally necessary in this position.
It will be essential to ensure stories have sufficient historical context and perspective. Getting at the real story will drive this position. Impeccable grammar and editing skills, deep knowledge of AP style, experience filing public records requests, and juggling and prioritizing multiple projects at once are all essential skills as well.
This new state government editor should be a leader and organizer, as well as a “doer.” The editor should be able to manage a team while also maintaining trusted sources within North Carolina government, breaking news and writing stories. This position will be part of WRAL’s enterprise team and report to the enterprise executive producer.
