The Transit and Shared Mobility group provides industry-leading services in data-driven planning to transit agencies, cities, and MPOs across the US. We apply our national knowledge and leadership while leveraging the strength of regional expertise to bring experience from across the country to provide an intimate understanding of our clients’ needs.We work with clients large and small, providing right-size solutions to the complex problems facing the industry: declining ridership, uncertain funding, interagency coordination, historic inequity, maintaining an effective workforce, and providing safe and sustainable services to the public.  

The Associate leverages a mix of qualitative (e.g., research, interviewing, outreach, and report development) and quantitative (e.g., data collection and analysis, development of spreadsheet tools, management of datasets, GIS mapping and data processing, dashboarding, and coding/scripting) assignments to support efforts such as statewide and regional planning studies, multimodal corridor studies, transit planning projects, financial and economic analysis, grant applications, transportation policy analysis, asset management and environmental analysis. While the position is located within the Transit and Shared Mobility Practice area, all staff have the opportunity to work on projects across CS’ portfolio including safety, resilience, freight, economics, and strategic planning; experience in multimodal/multidisciplinary planning is an asset.

Associate-level staff also have growing responsibilities to interface with clients and perform business development tasks such as networking and proposal development. They take responsibility for products delivered to clients, and take pride in deliverables that reflect well on the clients and on Cambridge Systematics. Our analysts are responsible for managing projects and tasks with support from senior staff, helping to manage and mentor junior staff, and adhering to CS internal quality assurance process from the start of the project to acceptance of final project deliverables by clients.

The Associate will bring a unique mix of skills, relationships, goals, and experiences to support a dynamic, fast-moving team that continually pushes the envelope in developing plans, guidance, and recommendations to clients across the country.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities       
      
Project Delivery        
•Plans, produces and delivers exceptional quality work that is thorough, polished, and reflects well on CS •Provides exceptional value-added service to project managers and/or clients and communicates consistently with internal and external team members •Actively listens and seeks to understand client or project manager needs

Project Management        
•Delivers all projects on-time, on-budget, and to the client or project manager’s satisfaction •Provides constructive and ongoing feedback to project team members, and mentors junior staff in developing their project delivery skills •Provides clear direction to all project staff regarding project objectives and their role in achieving them •Develops and implements project delivery plan for each project       
      
Business Development        
•Participates in regional, business unit, practice area, and other business development initiative meetings to identify and coordinate BD and marketing activities •Contributes to sound bid/no-bid decisions •Develops effective win themes, teaming strategies, pricing strategies, and technical content for all proposals in area of responsibility •Builds and maintains long-term client relationships and actively listens to their needs •Builds strong positive relationships with management and senior consultants, and marketing & communications staff to develop winning proposals        

Position Requirements     
  • A Master’s degree in Planning, Civil Engineering, Public Administration, or a related field; or, equivalent experience in the private or public planning sector, plus
  • 4+ years of experience in transportation planning, engineering, consulting, or a related field
  • Proficiency in commonly-used software tools, such as Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint and ESRI ArcGIS
  • The ability to work and lead tasks both independently and as part of a team
  • Proven communication skills, including narrative writing and delivering presentations
  • A desire to deepen both technical and policy knowledge in the area of public transit
Preferred Qualifications     
  • Previous experience in public transit planning, policy, or analysis
  • Previous or current project management or business development experience
  • Experience in working in a consulting context (as either a private-sector consultant or public-sector client)
  • Located in (or willing to relocate to) California, Oregon, or Washington
