The New Opportunities Group
New Opportunities brings the majority of our extensive breadth of technical expertise to ensure large scale transformation of education systems into one team. This team kick-starts new programs in new countries. Each member of the team is responsible for a core area of expertise, and then setting up all work and functions related to that expertise in the new program/new country. This includes putting all relevant policies, practices, systems and technology in place, and leading the hiring of the leader who will take charge of this work as the permanent lead for this body of work. This is Bridge’s SWAT team, with specialists brought together to solve the critical and urgent problem of launching a state or nation-wide new program. This team must work collaboratively, thrive in creating order out of chaos, and understand that proactive problem solving is a daily task. All members of this team should expect extensive travel to remote and underserved areas, and to be resident in 2 other locations per year, setting up new programs. When not deployed on starting a specific program, each team member will do work with the core technical team which he or she represents, to support special projects, deepen technical knowledge, and otherwise advance in the field. This team is critical to Bridge delivering on our shared vision of transforming the lives of 10,000,000+ children, and in so doing seeing peace and prosperity where we work.
Schools is the heart of Bridge. Schools is responsible for ensuring all of the work created by our expert teams, including Instructional Design, Leadership & Development, Technology, Communications, and Insight, are used in each school, and each school is managed to achieve its goal of ensuring every child enjoys a learning environment that develops her core skills, knowledge and confidence. The performance of the entire organization is led by the Schools Group, which works to strengthen school enrollment and student retention, by ensuring every school is regarded as the strongest school in its neighborhood and delivers on improved learning outcomes for children. Schools is the largest team in the organization, as this Group is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day management of each school. We engage with school leaders and teachers every day, ensuring ongoing professional development, performance management, and intensive coaching. Our investments in instructional design and teachers’ professional development are overseen by the Schools Group, and academics is at the forefront of our school programming. We are always seeking effective ways of ensuring every school is supported with data-driven practices. We measure our success through increased enrollments in the school, strength in management and community engagement, and by the learning outcomes of the children in the classroom. We are performance driven.
About the Role
The Schools Director for the New Opportunities group is responsible for management of every school during the crucial first months of the programme. The inaugural cohort of schools in any territory could range from the 100s to the 1000s, and every single school leader must be prepared to launch this brand new programme successfully. In this role, you are responsible for developing the large staff that will supervise schools during these first few pivotal months and beyond. You will introduce them to the systems they will use to manage the schools, use data coming in from those systems to improve performance in each school, and serve as a coach to improve the efficacy of the team. Eventually, you will hire your permanent replacement for this market, ensuring (s)he is set up to succeed even after you leave to begin work in another new market.
What You Will Do
● Ensure world-class day-to-day management across 1000s of schools
● Learn the status quo Schools programme inside and out, including a variety of reports on various management metrics, the parent and community engagement strategy, and the full suite of school management tools.
● Conduct field research to gather initial data about school leaders and school management in the new market
● Collaborate with the Leadership & Development director to ensure the induction training adequately sets up school leaders for success in this new environment
● Write the Schools Plan for the new market through thoughtful merging of the standard Schools programme and the particular needs of the market
● Prepare and present detailed plans to the relevant government officials about our programme as needed
● Hire, train, and oversee the work of all Schools Supervisors
● Hire and onboard the Schools Director who will permanently take over the Schools programme in the new market after you leave
What You Should Have
● 10 years’ experience as a manager of a large team of adults, preferably in a school or education-related setting
● Proven track record using data-driven approach to lead a team toward accomplishing an ambitious objective
● The charisma to motivate a large group of people
● Love of travel and ability to spend upwards of 75% of the job travelling
● Openness to new settings and constant change
● Scrappiness, ability to solve problems when no clear path is presented for doing so
● The skill and discipline needed to create order amidst chaos; strong project management
● Cultural sensitivity, emotional maturity, discretion
● Experience of living and/or working in emerging markets, including rural and remote communities
● A detailed doer – You have a track record of getting things done. You’re organized and responsive. You take ownership of every idea you touch and execute it to a fine level of detail, setting targets, engaging others, and doing whatever it takes to get the job done. You can multi-task dozens of such projects at once and never lose sight of the details. Likely, you have some experience in a start-up or other rapid-growth company.

On top of that, Bridge works in often fragile, sometimes volatile low-resource communities and with complex government systems. You need to be flexible and ready to get everything done effectively, quickly, and affordably with the materials at hand.
