The Role

The role of a Training Specialist involves contributing to the planning and implementation of programs that aim to improve the skills and knowledge of various team members and managers. These programs include bus, rail, paratransit, vehicle maintenance, maintenance of way, and facility maintenance training. The primary responsibility of a Training Specialist is to develop and deliver effective, engaging, and timely training programs. The Training Specialist works in close collaboration with Operations Division leaders to ensure that the training provided aligns with employee development, transit services, and customer experience objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, implement, and evaluate high-quality learning and development materials.
  • Develop instructional materials such as presentations, videos, and hands-on training materials.
  • Create training curriculum and lead training sessions in line with sound adult learning and instructional design principles to help new employees achieve performance standards.
  • Understand sound adult learning and instructional design principles and methodologies.
  • Create learning content that suits the needs of learners in various formats (instructor-led, self-paced, and blended learning).
  • Conduct surveys, interviews, and consultations with Metro Transit Operations team members to assess training needs.
  • Design and create training manuals, online learning modules, and course materials.
  • Continuously modernize and improve training assessments to enhance learning.
  • Review training materials from various sources and select appropriate content.
  • Deliver training to employees using various instructional techniques.
  • Assist in evaluating training programs.
  • Perform administrative tasks like scheduling classes, setting up systems and equipment, and coordinating enrollment in training.
  • Create, plan, and execute training programs for Metro Transit Operations.
  • Develop training programs that occur online and in person.
  • Deliver training to employees using various instructional techniques like lectures, group exercises, and other formats.
  • Assign and update training curricula or materials in the learning management system (LMS).
  • Deliver training using video, self-guided instructional manuals, and online applications.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of instructional design.
  • Knowledge of traditional and modern training methods.
  • Knowledge of the ADDIE process, and a demonstrated ability to write and administer instructional plans. 
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory.
  • Knowledge of learning management software.
  • Knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and DOT regulations.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite of programs as used by the agency (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access). 
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Possess strong analytical skills and the ability to think creatively to introduce innovative ideas to the team.
  • Must be flexible and can adapt to changing business needs and priorities.
  • Must have experience in public speaking.
  • Ability to learn general Transit Operations. 
  • Ability to present complex information effectively.
  • Ability to convey information clearly and facilitate learning to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team to design training based on training objectives. 
  • Ability to work with subject matter experts to identify key training elements for instruction.
  • Ability to handle ambiguity and a fast-paced environment and be willing to speak up and ask questions.
  • Ability to recognize learning styles and potential learning disabilities and the ability to adjust training techniques to meet the needs of the learner.
  • Ability to solve problems in conjunction with others or independently.

 

Education

Experience

Degree: Bachelor’s Degree is Required

 

Years: Five (5) to Ten (10)

Field: Adult Education or instructional Design Preferred

Field: Training, Instructional design, Public Speaking
