JOB SUMMARY: 

The Aspire Intern Principal primary role is to develop practical experience in the duties and responsibilities of a Principal under the supervision and mentorship of a Principal.  The Intern Principal will learn on the job experience including  managing all the functions of an individual school site, the education program,  office operations, budget, community relations, personnel and facilities in accordance with Aspire standards. 

The Aspire Intern Principal is an aspiring Principal preparing to lead an Aspire school in a 1-year mentorship program, although this may depend on vacancies and alignment.  Intern Principals are committed to and actively contribute to the success of their placement school and act in alignment with the rest of the school leadership team vision and priorities.  The Intern Principal will assist in leading both instruction and school culture as the leader of subsets of teachers in either specific grade levels and/or departments and develop full ownership of clear responsibilities at the school-level throughout the mentorship program. 

In addition to their school-based performance goals, Intern Principals are actively developing leadership skills and competencies. They actively seek growth through participation in high-quality, meaningful formal and informal professional development, invaluable on the job training, transformative coaching, and cohort based learning experiences with leaders across the Aspire network. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

Under the supervision of a mentor principal, the interim principal will learn and develop in the the following skills (but will not oversee them):

  • Instructional leadership for the school site 

o Maintain school-wide focus on high standards of student achievement 

o Maintain curriculum standards; model Aspire instructional guidelines 

o Manage process for analyzing data to increase student achievement 

o Support New Teachers through Induction. 

  • Assist in managing human resources 

o Attract and select top performers 

o Coach and provide professional development opportunities 

o Develop collaborative team culture 

o Adhere to company policy and state/federal employment laws 

o Consult with Human Resources as appropriate 

  • Assist in managing all resources at school site and/or manage specified grant or categorical funds o Set and maintain a balanced budget 

o Adhere to restrictions and reporting requirements of funds 

o Plan for future needs 

o Adhere to company policy and protocols for sound fiscal management  

  • Represent the school site in building an effective school community 

o Work with parents to better serve students 

o Garner support from community groups and leaders 

o Develop positive relationships with sponsoring district and neighborhood schools

  •  Daily operations, facilities, safety, and administrative processes o Address issues and problems that arise in a principle-centered, creative, thoughtful and  constructive way 

o Follow-up with constituents as needed

o Seek outside support as appropriate 

  • Lead projects as discussed with principal, including long-term strategic planning, process improvement,  cycle of inquiry-driven instructional improvements, operational improvement, charter renewal, or any  other projects required at the school site 

  • Work in collaboration with other Principals and Home Office to achieve site and organizational goals ∙ Demonstrate knowledge of, and support, Aspire Public Schools mission, vision, value statements,  standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of  ethical behavior 

  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Required knowledge, skills & abilities: 

  • Demonstrated commitment to students and learning 
  • Experience with instructional leadership, including demonstrated knowledge of curriculum, instruction,  assessment, and developing teachers  
  • Excellent relationship-building and management skills 
  • Strong problem-solving and consensus-building abilities 
  • Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to write clearly  and persuasively and interact effectively with different audiences 
  • Excellent organization, time management and follow-up skills; high sense of urgency; demonstrated  ability to successfully handle multiple projects concurrently; ability to work as a team ∙ Entrepreneurial passion 



Competencies:

  • Expertise in applicable grade-level Common Core State Standards, Instructional leadership and teaching experience: proven results in student learning as an instructional leader
  • Knowledge of teacher and leader development frameworks and ability to co-develop aligned content and systems (ex. Transformational Leadership Framework-TLF, Aspire Student Learning Framework-ASLF)
  • Command of the instruction-assessment cycle, and ability to apply this knowledge to develop a cohesive Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment program
  • Ability to coach others (including school site administrators) and improve their practice
  • Exceptional ability to bridge and enhance cooperative working relationships
  • Ability to manage projects including development, implementation and evaluation
  • Ability to communicate proactively, effectively and provide and act on feedback
  • Strong problem analysis and problem resolution skills using an inquiry framework 
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to contribute to a team
  • Understands and applies an equity centered lens in problem solving
  • Comfort with engaging in conversations that might push people out of their comfort zones, especially in regards to discussions about race and educational equity

REQUIRED EDUCATION, CREDENTIALS AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, with relevant degree and/or content expertise;
  • Master’s degree in education preferred

Experience:

  • 5+ years demonstrated teaching and leading experience in a K-12 education setting required
  • 1+ years of  experience with school and or district office leadership preferred

Credentialing:

  • Clear CA Credential and CLAD certification required 
  • CA Administrative Services Credential preferred
