Position Summary:

The Senior Director Pharmacology and Scientific Operations is tasked to build and lead a team responsible for the design and execution of all preclinical studies evaluating the therapeutic potential of novel compounds and targets. This individual and his/her team will work closely with Apellis project teams and will provide high quality preclinical data necessary for decision making and advancement of projects into clinical development or regulatory review. This role is also overseeing all operations of the ‘Apellis Innovation Center’ (Laboratory) and will set the standards for a safe and efficient laboratory environment.

The successful candidate has a passion for immunology, the central nervous system and is expected to expand Apellis’ product pipeline with new initiatives from target identification to preclinical proof-of-concept. Key

Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain disease and target specific in vitro & in vivo disease models incl.  advanced data analysis capabilities
  • Screen and evaluate technologies for their therapeutic potential
  • Collaborate with other research functions as well as business development in evaluating novel technologies.
  • Building and maintaining a laboratory compliant with all rules and regulations.
  • Contribute to building a data-driven scientific culture at Apellis.
  • Execute projects within agreed upon timelines and costs
  • Responsible for early research pipeline in strategic areas
  • Provide rigorous scientific data to support decision making

Education:

  • MD, PharmD or PhD in life-sciences.

Experience:

  • 7+ years of experience in industrial preclinical pharmacology
  • Broad experience in preclinical pharmacology of the central nervous system. Knowledge of the innate immune system is a plus.
  • Strong scientific track record
  • Leading a cross-functional team in a matrix organization.
  • Excellent network in the field of CNS research.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

This is largely a sedentary role; however, some crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering and grasping is required. This role requires the ability to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds. This role requires visual acuity and the ability to look through a microscope to analyze images.

This job operates in a lab environment and routinely uses standard lab and office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, microscopes, etc. In this position you might be exposed to certain chemicals and biologics, including possibly infectious material.
