Apellis is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of novel therapeutic compounds to treat disease through the inhibition of the complement system, which is an integral component of the immune system, at the level of C3, the central protein in the complement cascade.

We believe that our lead product candidate, APL-2, has the potential to be a first-in-class treatment targeting C3 that may address the limitations of existing treatment options or provide a treatment option where there currently is none. APL-2 has already shown activity that we believe is clinically meaningful in clinical trials for two distinct medical conditions—geographic atrophy in age-related macular degeneration (GA) and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). We plan to conduct additional clinical trials in GA, PNH, autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) and complement-dependent nephropathies.

Associate Director, Global Ophthalmology Marketing
Reports to: Sr. Director – Global Commercial Lead - Ophthalmology
Location: Waltham, MA

Position Summary: 
Apellis is seeking a passionate and talented marketer for the role of Associate Director, Global Marketing – Ophthamology. It is an incredible opportunity to make a significant impact for the patients affected by GA and launch the first approved therapy for GA. 

A key position on the Ophthalmology Global Brand team, this role will be responsible for brand strategy development and executing launch tactics at a global level as well as liaising with major affiliates and cross functional partners to ensure the strategy is executed through at the global and local level. This individual will be driving the development of both unbranded and branded campaigns and messaging platform. Responsibilities will include leading key strategic projects like defining and leading our global congress and ad board strategy.  This role will report to the Senior Director, Global Commercial Lead. 

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Brand Strategy Development
  • Development and execution of key global launch tactics including branded and disease state campaigns, positioning, and messaging platforms; engaging affiliates to ensure adoption
  • Cross-functional leadership of global congress strategy, KOL mapping, and ad board plan with execution of global-led congresses and ad-boards
  • Support global launch preparation and facilitate sharing of best practices for local implementation of brand strategies to ensure local launch success
  • Partner with global business intelligence team to identify, define, and execute market research to understand and provide actionable customer and market insights
  • Independently work closely with regions to provide all required communication assets in a timely fashion
  • Establish strong relationships and develop collaborative partnerships with key stakeholders in the field of GA (and other future indications)
  • Identify and manage resources (budget tracking and agency management) 

Education, Registration & Certification:

  • BS/BA degree in life sciences, MBA preferred 


  • 8+ years of biotech/pharma experience
  • Bachelors degree required, advanced degree (MBA) preferred – Marketing concentration preferred
  • In-line marketing experience required - demonstrating roles of increasing scope and responsibility
  • Experience in affiliate/global launches and specialty diseases is highly preferred
  • Ophthalmology experience preferred
  • Prior experience on both local/regional marketing teams as well as global marketing teams preferred

  • Demonstrated integrity on the job, including an understanding of relevant rules and regulations

  • Strong track record of project and process management skills, along with the ability to work on multiple tasks, and to effectively prioritize
  • Willing to travel domestically and internationally up to 30% of the time and attend events outside of business hours (e.g., occasional weekends and evenings)
