Position Summary:

The Senior Director of Medical Affairs, Ophthalmology is a key member of the global medical affairs team who will work closely with medical affairs, clinical operations, clinical development, commercial, legal, regulatory, quality, research and corporate communications to develop and implement the global medical affairs strategy for ophthalmology. The successful candidate will provide critical medical insights, training and perspectives to drive late stage clinical development and life cycle management while preparing medical affairs for launch readiness in the ophthalmology space.  The successful candidate will partner with market access, commercial, program team, communications, and other key stakeholders to ensure alignment of global medical affairs strategies.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Oversee Global Medical Affairs (GMA) ophthalmology team
  • Develop and implement GMA strategy for APL-2 in ophthalmology
  • Represent GMA at ophthalmology program teams
  • Partner with EU Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, and Global Commercial teams on key initiatives including clinical trial execution, NDA/MAA planning, and launch planning
  • Oversee US launch of APL-2 in geographic atrophy
  • Provide strategic and medical input into execution of publication plan
  • Evaluate clinical and scientific data and communication gaps for APL-2 in ophthalmology and collaborate with cross functional team on approaches to fill identified data and/or communication gaps in alignment with overall strategic objectives
  • Lead and implement global medical scientific engagement program including KOL engagement strategy, insights gathering strategy, advisory boards

Education, Registration & Certification:

  • Must have a PhD, Pharm D or MD level degree or equivalent


  • 5-10 years + experience in medical affairs organization
  • Experience in ophthalmology strongly preferred
  • Significant experience across drug life cycle, particularly in phase 3 development and in post-marketing setting; launch experience preferred.

 Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Strong leadership skills, including demonstrated ability to lead a cross-functional team, and influence at all levels of an organization.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation and facilitation.
  • Ability to work independently and with flexibility to handle work flow in a fast-paced environment.
  • Some travel will be required, up to 40%.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
