Sr. Scientist, Protein Chemistry

Our Discovery Research Team is expanding rapidly.  We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Sr Scientist, Protein Chemistry.

We are seeking a Protein Chemist with biotech experience in purification process development and biologics manufacturing.  The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience in therapeutic protein process development (DSP development), and strong analytical skills with a wide range of analytical methods.  Experience with technology transfer and management of Contract Development and Mfg. Organizations (CDMOs) is required.  Experience with protein formulations and/or fermentation/cell culture process development is a plus.    

The successful candidate has a passion and track record in protein chemistry and purification, biologics drug development and discovery research. A solid understanding of cell biology and immunology is beneficial.

Key Responsibilities:

  • While maintaining a personal laboratory, purify and characterize small quantities of proteins of interest for research studies
  • Develop DS purification processes for therapeutic protein candidates
  • Lead tech. transfer of DSPs to CDMO vendors
  • Lead oversite of CDMO development and manufacturing activities
  • Be an active member of the Apellis Innovation Center striving to develop novel therapeutics to address unmet medical needs
  • Contribute to building a data-driven scientific culture at Apellis.


  • PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry or life-sciences


  • 5-8 years of experience in industrial discovery and/or process/analytical development of therapeutic biologics required;
  • Strong understanding of the drug discovery and development process of biologics up to IND submission required;
  • Strong scientific track record required;
  • Understanding and experience with GMPs and quality management systems preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

This is largely focused on Lab work and requires standing for prolonged periods of time. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

This job operates in a professional office environment and/or laboratory one and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
