Position Summary:

Apellis is seeking a passionate and strategic commercial leader for the role of Senior Director, Head of North America Patient Services & Nurse Teams. It is an outstanding opportunity to make a significant impact for patients and the company, establishing two key commercial functions for the first commercial launch for Apellis and beyond.

The Senior Director will be a strategic thinker who works operationally, steadfastly focused on delivering the desired customer experience for patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers in alignment with corporate values and product strategy. They will design and build patient services as well as establish nurse field teams for the North America affiliate. They will lead those functions through the launch of products for rare and specialty conditions. And they will be deeply engaged with cross-functional partners who are focused on customer needs, fostering collaboration and accountability.

The Senior Director will manage a team of professionals who design and manage the two programs. They will serve as a key member of the North America leadership team. And they will report to the Senior Vice President, Head of North America.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Collaborate with key members of the North America and global commercial teams to establish a vision for the desired customer experience for patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals based on deep customer insights
  • Establish the vision and requirements for North America patient services and nurse teams, anchoring on the desired customer experience, product strategy, and corporate values
  • Determine whether to build patient services and nurse teams in-house vs outsource to trusted partners
  • Build the patient services and nurse teams organizations and/or out-source models (as appropriate) and offerings. Key elements may include injection training, patient education, patient support, case management, reimbursement services, patient assistance and affordability programming, distribution liaising, etc.
  • Hire and manage high-performing operational leads to oversee the day-to-day operations of the patient services and nurse teams
  • Evaluate and optimize performance by leveraging metrics that align to the desired customer experience and support business objectives
  • Cultivate strong, positive relationships with key cross-functional partners, including medical affairs, patient advocacy, marketing, sales, and compliance. Use those partnerships to uncover points of intersection and synergy to improve outcomes
  • Help breed a culture of patient-focus and customer-centricity throughout the organization
  • Work closely with regulatory, legal, and compliance to build policies and procedures related to patient services and nurse teams. Hold the patient services and nurse organizations to a high ethical standard
  • Efficiently and thoughtfully administer the department budget

Education, Registration & Certification:

  • BS/BA degree in life sciences, MBA preferred

Experience:

  • 12+ years of biotech/pharma experience, with majority of experience in North America affiliate roles
  • Experience in patient services and/or or nurse team organizations
  • Experience in launches and rare diseases is preferred

  • Passion for understanding and championing the needs of people living with rare diseases, their caregivers, and healthcare providers, prioritizing them in the execution of commercial operations
  • Ability to navigate and be successful in a fast-paced, results-driven environment, managing through ambiguity
  • Commitment to collaboration and engagement, with a history of success leading in a matrix environment and with external partners/vendors
  • An entrepreneurial spirit coupled with the drive to embrace innovation and develop creative but well-reasoned solutions to business challenges
  • Demonstrated integrity on the job, including an understanding of relevant rules and regulations
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence across functions and varying levels of the organization 
  • This role can be staffed remotely for the right candidate, however that person would need to plan for frequent trips to the Waltham office

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
