Position Summary:

Apellis is looking to hire a highly experienced Senior Director of Commercial Supply Chain to join the Supply Chain team and help lead the company into its next stage toward commercialization of its products around the world.  Reporting into the Vice President of Supply Chain, this individual will oversee all aspects of commercial launch supply to ensure reliable, compliant, cost effective, and on-time supply of product. Candidates should have expertise in commercial supply chain operations and practices, be forward-thinking, and demonstrate exceptional attention to detail and ability to succeed in a fast-paced environment. 


Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership with respect to Apellis’ global commercial supply chain function and disciplines including: planning, sourcing, labeling, packaging, inventory management, and distribution.  Be a key interface to the commercial organization. 
  • Work cross-functionally to establish and oversee, as the business process owner, Apellis’ commercial sales and operations planning process (S&OP).
  • Install and optimize best-in-class supplier relationship management practices with Apellis’ key suppliers and service-providers of its commercial products.
  • Prepare for commercial launch. Work with the VP of Supply Chain and other resources and functions to build new infrastructure to support commercialization efforts that create both supply chain agility and visibility.  Infrastructure includes the following :
    • Structural elements including: Policies, processes, procedures, and systems (technology) to support product launch, agile life-cycle management, and scalable commercialization efforts.
    • Sourcing and selection of commercial packaging suppliers, third-party logistics (3PL) vendors, and data management host providers. Contracting, setup, and management of these service providers
    • Management of the negotiation of contracts more broadly across the supply chain with established suppliers, distributors, vendors, and customers. Ownership of the contract deliverables and obligations. 
    • Establishment of processes, systems and vendors to support compliance with the DSCSA and product serialization.
    • Develop a supply chain security program and incorporate into both product and supply chain design
    • Participate in the selection and implementation of the company’s ERP system.
  • Ensure consistent, reliable, and complant supply of commercial products in accordance with the forecast and inventory requirements, the planning assumptions, and supply budget
  • Develop and oversee the periodic revision of Apellis’ commercial supply chain strategy.
  • Establish excellent working relationships with Technical Operations, Quality, Commerical Operations, and Finance functions and forge integrated ways of working to efficiently manage and report on the flow of product, information, and cash.
  • Collaborate with others to conduct supply chain risk management process
  • Develop and manage relationships with key external business partners, suppliers, vendors and consultants to ensure product supply and market needs are met.

Education, Registration & Certification:

  • BS in Science, Business, Supply Chain Management, or related fields
  • MBA preferred
  • APICS certification preferred: CSCP and/or CPIM

Minimum Required Experience

  • At least 16 years of pharmaceutical industry experience
  • At least 12 years of global commercial supply chain experience and leadership
  • Experience managing supply chains across a broad range of drug product types
  • Demonstrated success having built either a supply chain function in support of a fast growing company
  • Demonstrated success installing and realizing new capabilities and infrastructure in support of the company’s first product launch and overall commercialization efforts
  • Successful new product introduction/launch experience
  • Experience building, coaching, and developing teams of supply chain professionals into the next supply chain leaders
  • Executive level supplier relationship management experience

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Deep and broad knowledge base of supply chain expertise across all SCOR operating model disciplines.
  • Strong Leadership skills. Able to represent the company externally and the Supply Chain function internally at the highest levels.
  • Extensive knowledge of regulated manufacturing, GMP, and quality systems within drug or device.
  • Demonstrated complex problem-solving ability and sound judgement ability
  • Solid team building, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Superior written, oral communication, and presentation skills along with the ability to communicate effectively with executive-level management 
  • Demonstrated business acumen and influencing skills
  • Highly organized, committed, results driven, problem solver

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Travel Requirements:

  • This role is based in Waltham, MA.
  • Some travel of approximately 10% will be required periodically
